(More customer reviews)//Operation Thunderhead// follows Captain John Dramesi, an American pilot who was shot down and subsequently captured during the Vietnam War. As a guest at one of the POW prisons (nicknamed the Hanoi Hilton by the men who were held there), he is constantly underfed, tortured, and humiliated. But despite the brutal techniques applied to make him give up information, Dramesi sticks to the American Code of Conduct. He resists his captors and repeatedly creates plans to escape, never deterred by the threats of the guards or the failures of his past attempts. One such plan was the seed for a secret rescue mission called Operation Thunderhead.
Kevin Dockery is a military historian, and he writes with accuracy and precision. He also writes simply, explaining complex terminology and events in a way that is accessible to the average reader. Unfortunately, in his effort to make //Operation Thunderhead// easily understood, Dockery often states the obvious or over explains the complicated which bogs down the narrative. Despite that, the story of Captain John Dramesi and the other American men who were held as prisoners of war is definitely worth reading and remembering.
