I was sucked in from the first page, and read this book in one sitting. Surprising character depth and growth for the format. Rachel and Riley have an amazing weekend fling. When Riley expects to continue seeing her, Rachel balks. A friend points out to Riley that Rachel is treating him the way he usually treats women; fun, with no strings. Riley decides to put all that sexy SEAL determination toward a new goal, winning Rachel's heart.
The same friend who points out to Riley that Rachel is giving him the "Riley Wilkes treatment" also tells him that he is not a good long term prospect, which brings up some introspection and self doubt. Riley fears his friend is right, that he doesn't have anything to offer a woman other than a good time in bed. He is so obviously uncomfortable with having to deal with these feelings, and he is uncertain how to be the man that Rachel would want. Riley really touched my heart, made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes. He is a GREAT hero.
Rachel is scared of anything that smacks of committment. She is still reeling over her sister Hailey's marriage to Nate, Riley's friend. She and Hailey own a bed and breakfast, but Rachel doesn't really want to run the B&B. As she moves toward forging a new career helping others promote their B&B's, she asks Riley to help her check out the prospective clients, which leads to some fun moments.
Hailey acts as the voice of reason, making Rachel understand how good Riley is to her and for her. She points out that he is her biggest cheerleader, encouraging Rachel to move forward with her dream, and gently points out that Rachel is not being fair to Riley. While he puts Rachel first, Rachel doesn't even know what Riley's dreams are. Hailey tells Rachel that she is throwing away a chance at happiness because she is afraid to be hurt in the future, which is making Rachel miserable now.
Jill Monroe made me care about these characters. Riley, with his fear that he has nothing more to offer than a pretty face. Rachel, who is so afraid of being hurt that she pushes away her chance at love. The story moves along swiftly, is tightly written with vivid imagery such that I could swear I smelled the ocean right along with the characters. Very satisfying read.
