Well as you may have already guessed from the title of this review that, I consider this book to be the third installment in the outstanding trilogy, which includes; On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society and On Combat, The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace which focus on the psychology of killing in combat and/or self-defense, which amounts to pretty much the same thing although usually in much different settings and circumstances. I guess one could also make the argument that killing during wartime is radically different than in self-defense, but that is an argument best left for another time and forum. I highly recommend that you also purchase and study these two previous volumes along with this one.
When I first started reading this book, I was reminded of a scene from the movie, The Shootist, starring John Wayne and Ron Howard. In this particular scene, Howard asks Wayne (who is playing a very proficient gunfighter who is elderly and dying of cancer) how he had fought so many gun battles over the years against such a wide range of opponents and come out the winner in every one of them. Wayne replies by telling Howard that it wasn't a matter of being the fastest with a gun, or even the best shot, the major factor was being "WILLING TO KILL" another human being without forethought or hesitation.
Most people aren't willing even under the most grave and extreme of circumstances to kill another human being, but there are a few out there that are. Some are criminals and psychopaths, most of them are not!
Anyone who knows anything about actually killing another human being will tell you that killing a human being is actually a fairly easy thing to do physically, but extremely difficult to do psychologically and spiritually (morally).
Now one might think that this book is solely about training the individual person mentally to prepare for and understand the effects of possibly killing another human being. If that person is you, you would be right! Although the contents of this book are a lot more in-depth and go into a lot of detail about a great many subjects that are all intertwined and concerned with the ability of the individual to condition their minds and their souls to face the very real possibility that they may have to, at one time or another, take another human beings life.
Here are just a few of the many things that I really liked about this book:
1. The three outstanding individuals who wrote and/or contributed to this book.
2. The thorough explanation of what physical exertion upon the body does to the mind.
3. How to condition the mind before, during, and after a potential violent confrontation.
4. The breakdown and detailed explanation on how to build a warrior mindset.
5. All of the various mental training techniques.
And a whole lot more!
I HIGHLY recommend this and the other two books in the trilogy to EVERYONE! Regardless of whether or not you are in law enforcement and/or the military, or a practicing martial artist, self-defense advocate, gun enthusiast, or simply someone who doesn't wish to become a victim/statistic at the hands of someone who doesn't adhere to the rules and laws of our society.
The authors of this book have presented you with a detailed lesson plan and blueprint to obtain and toughen YOUR warrior mindset. Now it is up to YOU to do it!
