(More customer reviews)If you're a SEAL fan and have read The Warrior Elite then this is a great companion to the book. It's not a book you read though - this one's all photos and a bit of text. The pictures of SEAL training are the best, actually, I know of NO OTHER book that has as many pics of BUD/S training. You see all the pics of what Dick Couch wrote about in Warrior Elite. Funny thing is that you see the guys from that BUD/S class because their names are written on their clothes but the author makes absolutely no mention of the people in the photos.
Another reviewer said the pics were "old and outdated." What?! They're all the pics that were NOT used in Couch's book and are from one of the latest BUD/S classes, the class that Couch wrote about. Couch's Warrior Elite isn't a picture book - this one is and it's great.

Roberts Ridge: A Story of Courage and Sacrifice on Takur Ghar Mountain, Afghanistan Review

(More customer reviews)I read this book over a weekend and was pleasantly surprised by it. I read "Not a Good Day to Die" a couple months ago and was waiting for this book to be published so I could compare the two. Of course, "Day" goes into much more detail regarding Operation Anaconda while "Ridge" focuses on the events on a single mountaintop, but I think both were well-written.
I prefer MacPherson's writing style in that he doesn't personalize the story at all. There is no reference to "me" or "I," only the story as told to him by the people involved. I feel that adding one's own voice to a work of non-fiction just makes the writer sound like a braggart and sometimes even discredits the account.
I do think that the target audience for this book is either military-related, or just very quick, because much of the terminology is not explained, especially when it comes to the "slang" style terms and phrases that the branches use in so much of their work.
As a book focusing on the events of Takur Ghar, it was great. However, if you have no idea what Operation Anaconda was about, I would recommend reading "Day" first, because "Ridge" does not go into the set-up of the Operation at all. "Ridge" is a wonderful way to delve further into the seventeen hours of combat operations of so many service members, and the characterization is much deeper than "Day" simply because there are fewer players involved.
I highly recommend this book, but read "Not a Good Day to Die" first if you have no frame of reference for Afghanistan or Operation Anaconda.

Operation Anaconda and Beyond Review

(More customer reviews)Although this is good book overall, but one may think the author is a former Delta Operator the way he kisses their ass. Also, he does nothing but badmouth and degrade Navy SEALs. In nearly every section where he is talking about the SEALs, he finds a way to make them seem amateurs in comparison to Delta, which isn't true. He does give a nod to the accomplishments of MAKO 26, but other than that he slags them for reasons I don't understand.
It takes a long time for the action to kick in, but once it starts it is very interesting and provides another example of how idiots often find themselves in top tier leadership roles within our military/Government.
