A Tactical Ethic: Moral Conduct in the Insurgent Battlespace Review

A Tactical Ethic: Moral Conduct in the Insurgent Battlespace

"A Tactical Ethic: Moral Conduct in the Insurgent Battlespace", by Dick Couch, is a handbook reminding the men and women who put boots on the ground that actions that seem logical to you, can have a far different effect than anything anticipated. Having served as a Navy SEAL during the Vietnam War and professor of "Moral Reasoning for Military Leaders" at the United States Naval Academy, Couch offers his expert insights to the current and next generation of warriors. Americans need to look no further than the embarrasment caused by bored, misguided soldiers at Abu Graib to understand why a book such as this is needed.
Couch begins the book with a statement of the moral problems currently facing our military. He writes, "If the Vietnam War was the first war in which TV cameras roamed the battlespace, then Iraq and Afghanistan are the first extended stuggles in which digital imaging, text messaging, and cell-phone cameras are commonplace. Today there is far more opportunity for a bad act to be reported." Couch proposes that the speed and ease of sharing that information will end up losing the fight for the "human terrain" -- the support of the local populace, for which the insurgents are also competing.
With a basic understanding of the problem, Couch investigates how America takes the current generation of youth and transforms the insecure teenageers into bold, confident men that serve on the front lines. Feminists may feel slighted that the book does not focus on women, but Couch offers very compeling arguments as to why women are not are not central to the issues addressed earlier. He then looks at ethics training integrated with the basic training of the Army and Marine Corps, neglecting the Air Force because it does not engage in the same type of small-unit combat actions that routinely interact with the local populace. He rounds out his analysis of the warrior ethic training with by examining the (lack of) integration of ethics training with the advanced training of the various Special Forces.
Couch concludes the book by proposing "Battlefield Rules of Engagement (ROE)", or the keys to moral success. He perfectly summarizes the the common vision of all warriors "All share a universal goal: to prepare appropriately for the fight, conduct themselves in battle with courage and virtue, win the fight, and return with honor." In this age of pocketcards, I'm sure that the 10 ROEs he proposes will make their way onto the next set issued to the men and women going into harm's way. They are succinct, understandable, and right on the mark. I highly recommend this book for NCOs and company grade officers -- your leadership will set the moral compass for the men and women who serve under you. This is a great book to help you chart the course.

Following the success of his recent book on Navy SEALs in Iraq, The Sheriff of Ramadi, bestselling author and combat veteran Dick Couch now examines the importance of battlefield ethics in effectively combating terrorists without losing the battle for the hearts of the local population. A former SEAL who led one of the only successful POW rescue operations in Vietnam, Couch warns that the mistakes made in Vietnam forty years ago are being repeated in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that the stakes are even higher now. His book takes a critical look at the battlefield conduct of U.S. ground-combat units fighting insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since the prize of the fight on the modern battlefield is the people, he warns every death has a consequence. Every killing has both strategic and moral significance for U.S. warriors. From his unique and qualified perspective, Couch examines the sources and issues that can lead to wrong conduct on the battlefield, and explains how it comes about and what can be done to correct it. He considers the roles of command intent and the official rules of engagement, but his primary focus is on ethical conduct at the squad and platoon level. Tactical ethics, according to the author s definition, is the moral and ethical armor that should accompany every American warrior into battle, and these standards apply to the engaged unit as well as to the individual. A harsh critic of immoral combat tactics, Couch offers realistic measures to correct these potentially devastating errors. He argues that as a nation, we must do all we can to protect our soldiers humanity, for their sake, so they can return from service with honor, and for our sake as a people and for our standing in the world.

I, being 16 years old and fasinated by military genre books andsuch, find this book amazing. I've already read Purple Heart, BronzeStar, and Navy Cross. After reading Medal of Honor, the book series was getting better and better. This series is excellent and H. Jay Riker is an excellent writer. I wish I could meet the man behind these great novels. I'm now reading Silver Star (wasn't at the bookstore till recently) and I truely love it. I like the books about the SEALs over the UDT books, but without the UDT, there would be no SEALs. I only hope H. Jay Riker continues to write about SEALs and makes books like these.

US Navy SEALs (Elite) Review

I was quite anxious to get this book as it's publication date was repeatedly pushed back since it's origianl publication date almost a year ago. What I finally got was very disappointing. Osprey and the author have done much better in the past, but stay away from this one. The cover of the book pretty much sums it up -- the title is US NAVY SEALS, but there is not a SEAL in sight on the cover. The section of the book descriping the naval spec ops community looks like it was cut and pasted verbatim from Specialoperations.com circa 1999. It spends alot of time descrbing the SEALS as there were a few years ago, but glances over the major changes that have occurred in the community recently and how they are currently structured and operate today. The artwork is poor and lacks the crispness and realism of other Osprey titles. There is nothing in it that has not been presented much better elsewhere. Wanna learn about the SEALS? Read Dick Couch's books. The Navy SEALS and the navy's Special Operations community deserves a better effort from Osprey, I hope that they give it another go.

After the United States' failures in special operations missions during the late 1970s and 1980, a decision was made to revamp its unconventional military capabilities. The subsequent reorganization and redesignation in 1983 created the SEALs as they are known today, and later the all-encompassing command for US special operations forces under which they operate. Since then, these Navy Special Warfare (NSW) forces have operated in Grenada, the Persian Gulf, Panama, Somalia, Bosnia, Haiti, and Liberia. NSW units have also participated in the ongoing missions of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. This book looks at the history, organization, training, uniforms, equipment and missions of the US Navy SEALs since their redesignation until the recent conflict in the Gulf.

Interrogation of Morals Review

Interrogation of Morals

I loved this book. Its a perfect look into the day to day activities of an intel officer in Afghanistan. You don't have to be in the military to enjoy this book, but I was and can relate to some of the events and humorous occurrences that Jason talks about. If you haven't been in the military this gives you an inside look into what actually occurs behind the scenes during war. It also gives you a perspective of the smooth and mostly not so smooth operations of the military. I found the book interesting and entertaining.

Hunters and Shooters: An Oral History of the U.S. Navy SEALs in Vietnam
Average Reviews:

The great thing about this oral history is that you get a personal feel for the characters as they talk about their experiences. The wide range of experiences are reflected in the wide range of personalities that the history is drawn from. The accounts are honest and sincere. Each account begins with a brief editorial introduction and summary of a different aspect of the SEALs unit formation and operational history in Viet Nam. This helps the reader to understand the subject as a broad total of experiences rather than just a bundle of yarns slapped together. The editor did a great job of putting the accounts in an informative sequence which gave this reviewer a greater background understanding of the following accounts as I progressed through the book.
I bought my copy during a visit to the SEAL/ UDT Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida and I strongly recommend other interested military buffs to buy this book and check out the museum. Well worth it.

Roberts Ridge: A Story of Courage and Sacrifice on Takur Ghar Mountain, Afghanistan Review

Roberts Ridge: A Story of Courage and Sacrifice on Takur Ghar Mountain, Afghanistan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book over a weekend and was pleasantly surprised by it. I read "Not a Good Day to Die" a couple months ago and was waiting for this book to be published so I could compare the two. Of course, "Day" goes into much more detail regarding Operation Anaconda while "Ridge" focuses on the events on a single mountaintop, but I think both were well-written.
I prefer MacPherson's writing style in that he doesn't personalize the story at all. There is no reference to "me" or "I," only the story as told to him by the people involved. I feel that adding one's own voice to a work of non-fiction just makes the writer sound like a braggart and sometimes even discredits the account.
I do think that the target audience for this book is either military-related, or just very quick, because much of the terminology is not explained, especially when it comes to the "slang" style terms and phrases that the branches use in so much of their work.
As a book focusing on the events of Takur Ghar, it was great. However, if you have no idea what Operation Anaconda was about, I would recommend reading "Day" first, because "Ridge" does not go into the set-up of the Operation at all. "Ridge" is a wonderful way to delve further into the seventeen hours of combat operations of so many service members, and the characterization is much deeper than "Day" simply because there are fewer players involved.
I highly recommend this book, but read "Not a Good Day to Die" first if you have no frame of reference for Afghanistan or Operation Anaconda.

Seal of Honor: Operation Red Wings and the Life of Lt Michael P. Murphy, Usn Review

Seal of Honor: Operation Red Wings and the Life of Lt Michael P. Murphy, Usn
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SEAL of Honor is a compelling read chock full of lessons learned for military and civilian alike. It is a tearjerker from the very beginning and Gary Williams does an excellent job of capturing the duality of our everyday peaceful lives here in the United States and the exceptional heroism and harrowing tragedies that occur overseas. He does this by highlighting the daily rhythm of the families involved that remain relatively unchanged until the news seeping out of Afghanistan provides a clue that Michael Murphy might have been near the action. All of the key figures in the book had continued on their daily regimen, worried, certainly upset that warriors had been killed and wounded, but of course thinking it had to be someone else. Then, with the news that Michael was involved, the world stopped for his loving parents, fiancé, friends, peers, and extended family around the Long Island and the Naval Special Warfare communities. This book works on many levels. First, it is an evenhanded account of a young man's drive to become a Navy SEAL despite several other life path opportunities. Some men and women just want to serve their country and Michael Murphy was of that noble gene pool. Second, SEAL of Honor captures the agony of those on the home front as they pine for their loved ones in harm's way and pray that the government vehicle doesn't stop in front of their house and officers in full dress uniform don't appear on their doorstep. Importantly, SEAL of Honor is also a trove of leadership lessons that future generations of service men and women can read, debate, and study as they formulate their own unique leadership styles. As an author of thriller fiction I always study heroes, real life and fictional, and the best heroes are humble, selfless, hard working, and determined. Michael Murphy is a true American hero in the finest sense of the word. Williams artfully captures the legacy he leaves behind that will help educate and train young leaders in our country. Williams captures well Murphy's upbringing in the Patchogue and Long Island communities and how his family, friends, and community helped shape his character and values. SEAL of Honor is more than an account of a military action. Rather, it is an examination of one man's life, his maturation, his service, his combat experience, and the actions that led to Michael Murphy being awarded the Medal of Honor. SEAL of Honor should be on every leader's short list of must read books.

Lieutenant Murphy, the leader of a Navy SEAL squad, was killed during a fierce battle against the Taliban on a remote mountainside in the Kongeral Valley of Afghanistan on 28 June 2005. The first to receive the nation s highest military honor for service in Afghanistan, Lieutenant Murphy was also the first naval officer to earn the medal since the Vietnam War. Honored for his courage and leadership in the face of certain death, he is now the subject of Naval Special Warfare courses on leadership, and a guided-missile destroyer, naval base, school, post office, ball park, and hospital emergency room have all been named in his honor. SEAL of Honor tells the story of Lieutenant Murphy s life and how he came to be the man that Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of the mission, called the best officer I ever knew, an iron-souled warrior of colossal, almost unbelievable courage in the face of the enemy. In attempting to answer why Lieutenant Murphy readily sacrificed his life for his comrades, the author traces the SEAL s journey from a seemingly ordinary life on New York s Long Island to those extraordinary last moments half a world away. Lieutenant Murphy s story has captured the nation s attention, making him one of the most celebrated Medal of Honor recipients since World War II.

This book takes you inside the Navy SEALs training program in Coronado. You are with Marcus Luttrell throughout BUD/S and Hell Week. You fly with him and his teammates in a C-130 to the Hindu Kush, where the hunt begins for bin Laden's right-hand man. But then it all goes terribly wrong, up there in the mountains of Afghanistan.
This book, written by Patrick Robinson, reads like a fast-paced thriller, told in Marcus's understated voice. It is a rivetting, important, sad story of lost friends, valor, courage and the intricacies of modern war. It is an important book, destined to become an American classic.

Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to be very close to Bin Laden with a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive. This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history. His squadmates fought valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive, blasted by an RPG into a place where his pursuers could not find him. Over the next four days, terribly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell crawled for miles through the mountains and was taken in by sympathetic villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors.A born and raised Texan, Marcus Luttrell takes us from the rigors of SEAL training, where he and his fellow SEALs discovered what it took to join the most elite of the American special forces, to a fight in the desolate hills of Afghanistan for which they never could have been prepared. His account of his squadmates' heroism and mutual support renders an experience that is both heartrending and life-affirming. In this rich chronicle of courage and sacrifice, honor and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers a powerful narrative of modern war.

Warrior Soul: The Memoir of a Navy Seal Review

Warrior Soul: The Memoir of a Navy Seal

Chuck can take simple words and twist them into a visual image that needs no further input. Going from the mundane hurry up and wait mentality of typical military ops, he takes you from humorous bar scenes to the horrors of terrorism and the mayhem resulting from underestimating the enemy and complacency. Political correctness takes its toll in attitudes, men, and the morale of entire countries. This can be read between the lines. Chuck pulls no punches and lays it out for anybody to see. The men who do the fighting and the ones who create the need for these men to fight are not generally on the same sheet of music. Politics and appeasement are the enemies. WARRIOR SOUL is not just another 'SEAL' book in typical fashion. I DO NOT compare it to the other books by former SEALs. This one is in a class by itself. Thanks for a great book and thanks for your service to our nation. Grab a copy of WARRIOR SOUL and devour it.

Suffer in Silence Review

Suffer in Silence

I decided to read this book because I had a friend that went through SEAL training. I was always curious about his experience. I got much more than I bargained for, inspiring me to write my first amazon review. Starting to read the book was like stepping into a roller coaster - once on, I couldn't step off till the ride was over! I was in the world... to the point where I was shivering every time they got surf torture.
After finishing Suffer in Silence, I was pretty disturbed. I couldn't believe that anyone (let alone anyone I knew) could/would go through this kind of experience. I asked my friend about his SEAL experience, specifically about the interaction with the instructors. He was surprised at what I knew, and pretty much confirmed that the kind of stuff portrayed in Suffer in Silence really happens. When I told him that I got the info from a book, he said that he wished he had read it to be able to mentally prepare himself before he had gone!
I feel pretty lucky to have had such a window into a world that I could otherwise never know, and I'm grateful for the new sense of connection that I feel with my friend. An outstanding book on every level!!

Seals at War Review

Seals at War
Average Reviews:

Hoyt is both a noted journalist and military historian whose previous books include CARRIER WAR, HITLER'S WAR, and YAMAMOTO. His primary interest has been the Second World War so perhaps SEALS AT WAR: THE STORY OF U.S. NAVY SPECIAL WARFARE has taken him somewhat out of his element. The title of this curious book is misleading as the Seals do not even appear until page 119, about halfway through the book! The subtitle is, or should be, the actual title as Hoyt begins with the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) of World War II, continues with the establishment of the Sea, Air, and Land special forces (SEALS) in 1961, and concludes with the Persian Gulf War of 1991. Perhaps this is not the book the author intended to write or what the publisher expected as it is rather disjointed and appears to have been hastily put together. In fact, there are two books lurking within as there is a heavy emphasis on the UDT's efforts to clear beaches for amphibious assault in World War II and the SEALS brutal counter-terrorist activities in Vietnam. Only brief chapters are dedicated to such conflicts as Korea, Grenada, Panama and none at all detailing clashes with Iranian forces in the Persian Gulf in 1988. Overall, Hoyt presents a superficial overview instead of an indepth history of U.S Navy Special Warfare which is anecdotal rather than analytical. The lack of a conclusion or speculation regarding the future role of the SEALS is disappointing. His chapters are uneven and unsymmetrical with some as short as three pages and others as long as nineteen. His bibliography is impressive but his chapter notes are terse and specific documentation is non-existant as is an index. Despite its faults, SEALS AT WAR does provide a glimpse of the dedication, discipline, and heroism of the men who have made up the UDTs and the SEALS. It is an adequate introductory study but those seeking a more substantial account will have to look elsewhere. One hopes that subsequent editions will be revised and upgraded as this book's true potential has yet to be realized.

The Intuitive Warrior: Lessons from a Navy SEAL on Unleashing Your Hidden Potential Review

The Intuitive Warrior: Lessons from a Navy SEAL on Unleashing Your Hidden Potential
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 193 page book is from 2009/2010. It is about the lessons our author learned as a Navy SEAL, especially the lessons using his well-honed intuition. Michael speaks of how accessing that intuition saved his life and also saved lives of others who have learned to access it. This book is dedicated to "all UDT/SEAL Warriors Past, Present and Future."
Former Navy SEALS will likely LOVE this book, because Michael speaks of the 24 years he spent in the SEALS and the training and experiences he had. Michael was stationed in turbulent places such as Iraq and in places all over the world. I would say the book is about 50 % SEAL experience (including his similar work as an independent security contractor) and about 50 % intuition and other related skills. The "other" might amaze many of you.
Michael explains a little about many of the "other" intuitive-related skills he developed. He mentions martial arts training and how it helped him to improve his mind/energy balance and focus. He speaks of the telepathic abilities he developed, where he could not only read the minds of team members, but also those of enemies. He speaks of an Out-of-Body experience (OBE), of astral projection (being able to see things as if you were in another place), of meditation (and how to do it). He talks about the Law of Attraction (how we attract what we put our attention and energy on), including how synchronistic events interplay in our lives. Michael explains a little about the Mayan culture, the 2012 alignment and energy changes, ancient cultures and beliefs, past lives, Atlantis and Lemuria, angels, ascended masters, and guides, the importance of NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP) (self programming), and getting your ego under control. Michael also taught some of these skills to other SEALS along the way.
You most likely know that SEAL training is probably the toughest training in the world. These men are truly "the elite" warriors. Our author has obviously developed both sides of his brain to the degree that few have or will. He has written this book to share his life-altering experiences with you, and from the perspective of one who MUST maintain razor sharp focus and clearness of mind at all times. This book is about training and utilizing the Warrior's Intuition to the degree and from the perception that few books will cover.
With all that said, Michael is also telling all who will listen and open their minds, that although most of us will never be SEALS, ALL of us can develop these intuitive skills. Wonderful book--small but packed with info--If you will open your mind to the possibility, it can suggest how to get started.

Although this is good book overall, but one may think the author is a former Delta Operator the way he kisses their ass. Also, he does nothing but badmouth and degrade Navy SEALs. In nearly every section where he is talking about the SEALs, he finds a way to make them seem amateurs in comparison to Delta, which isn't true. He does give a nod to the accomplishments of MAKO 26, but other than that he slags them for reasons I don't understand.
It takes a long time for the action to kick in, but once it starts it is very interesting and provides another example of how idiots often find themselves in top tier leadership roles within our military/Government.
