COMBATIVE FUNDAMENTALS an Unconventional Approach Review

COMBATIVE FUNDAMENTALS an Unconventional Approach

I read this book few years ago, after participating in an introductory pistol course conducted by the author. At the time, I thought it well written and a useful reference.
Since then, I've undergone several hundred hours more firearms training, some of which was again with the author, and keep coming back to this excellent resource with a deeper appreciation of its worth.
Mr. Gonzales has provided us with a book that keeps on giving, in that the deeper one goes into one's own practice and development with firearms, the more information and reinforcement can be gleaned from this excellent reference book.
I highly recommend it to anyone interested in, or involved with, firearms practice or training.
Sincerely,
Ron Flowers
Police Officer, SE Pennsylvania

Luminous Base: Stories about Corpsmen and Helicopters, Courage and Sacrifice Review

Luminous Base: Stories about Corpsmen and Helicopters, Courage and Sacrifice

Bruce has done an outstanding job telling the stories of U.S. Navy Corpsmen and their involvement with helicopters. Bruce writes in the first person and justifiably so: "He's been there and done that." Bruce knew many of the corpsmen whose lives tragically ended in the course of saving lives via helicopter evacuation. He tells the stories of other corpsmen who became victims of accidents in training or operational incidents, while passengers in aircraft downed by enemy action or attempting peacetime rescue. He begins at the beginning with the earliest days of helicopters at the end of WWII and takes the reader to the more recent conflicts in the Middle East.
Bruce writes with a sensitiveness that reflects his lifetime of caring for the sick and injured. This is a book that will appeal to anyone interested in military history, combat medicine, aviation, or just interested in reading of true heroes serving their country by aiding others.
This is a good read.
Captain William S. Dial, Medical Service Corps, USN (Ret.)

Since the last century, in war an in peace, in good weather and bad, the helicopter has proven itself overand over again when it has been used for military medical evacuations, for search and rescue missions, aswell as for simple transportation.Among the thousands who have flownon one of these aircraft have been U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsmen who didso as aircrew members, as patients, oras passengers. And between 1962 and2007 there were fifty-seven of these menwho lost their lives. All of these corpsmen were killed far from their homes in places that include Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq, Afghanistan,in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest and the American Southwest. The contents of Luminous Base tells the individual story of each man, with some ofthese accompanied by comments from family or friends. In addition to these stories there are sixteen other corpsmen that did not perish who provided their personal experiences. One of these is a female senior enlisted corpsman who flew medical evacuations in Iraq and went on to serve in Afghanistan as well. To provide a better appreciation for the corpsman and his work environs, this book provides an in-depth look at the evolution of the Navy'smedical evacuation system, the levels of care from the battlefield to back home and the type of care provided at each level; the various helicopters used over the years, fromthe UH-34D to the Osprey; and a look atthe training opportunities that are offered to today's Navy Corpsmen. This is the first book to be written that offers such a unique collection of tales about Navy Corpsmen associated with helicopters who have all demonstrated such courage, and selflessness, and in some cases the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.

Delta Force: Task Force Dagger Review

Delta Force: Task Force Dagger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Delta Force: Task Force Dagger is the next in the line of, so far, 3 other Delta Force games, the last being Land Warrior and the next, Black Hawk Down. All have been created mainly by Novalogic, but this time they are being assisted by Zomebie Studios.
Ok, now to the good stuff! Task Force Dagger is supposed to contain about 30 new weapons, and 25 new missions, but probably one of the coolest features is that you can choose from different types of characters, not just gunner, sniper, cqb, medic, nader, from Land Warrior, but things such as SEALS, Army Rangers, and, of course, Delta Force operatives. The enourmous levels given out by Novalogic and enourmous servers hosting countless numbers of players won't stop in this game either.
The game was planned to be released on May 22nd i believe, but was pushed back until June 26th, and God knows why Amazon but nobody else has it, so it may be better to wait a little while before purchasing the game, because the only real point to buy the game is for the multiplayer ability.
Stats are recorded. Your time in the hill, number of flags captured, kills, shots, everything. That is one awesome feature, and the better your statistics are, the higher you move up in rank. The single player game is the only weakness of the franchise, enemies have never been very smart, and a simple one shot with the pistol in the leg can take an enemy down. More teamwork could be used in the missions as well as other features, but the co-operative mode can be a blast, but can be pretty dull sometimes.
The game comes with a mission editor in which levels can be created by the public and played on Novaworld. That is also an interesting feature that proves to be very beneficial, even though the maps created by Novaworld are also pretty wonderful.
This game has got to be one of the greatest multiplayer marvels of all time, and will give the various Star Wars and other multiplayer games a run for their money, with almost all players that have Land Warrior already hellbent on picking up this next game in the popular series.
The only down side is the single player missions, but users can also create their own, and multiplayer is all you'll really do once you get the game. It's a great game and i recommend you to purchase it.

Combat Corpsman Review

Combat Corpsman
Average Reviews:

This is a very readable and informing memoir by a past Marine and eventual Navy SEAL Corpsman, better known as "Doc" to all those broken in combat he mended.
The majority of the book tells of his service in Vietnam during the mid to late 1960's, with the west coast branch of SEALS. Most SEALS were only stationed in country for 6 months at a time, for as the author states, the constant intensity could dull their senses, and that could cost them their lives. The North Vietnamese put bounties on all these "green faced men" hoping to kill a SEAL whenever possible. The bounty was both a tribute of their respect for the SEALS but also a sign of their deep-seated fear of the SEALS.
I was leaving the Navy to come back for college at about the time Greg McPartlin was entering the Navy. So some of the topics he talks about are very familiar to me, but a reader does not need to be "prior service" to read and enjoy this book.
In a review written for The Military Book Club recently, I stated that this book is one of very few excellent books it's been my good fortune to encounter. His story and that of his fellow SEALS will give the reader an insider's view of the "above and beyond" nature of service all these men gave, and each of these individuals are true heroes in the best sense of the word. Though undoubtedly each would not find that a compliment with which they are comfortable. They, for example, would turn down a Purple Heart award, unless they were terribly wounded. No rear echelon types here; however that may be, all of these men are some of the finest to ever wear the uniform of the United States.
Only two items would have made this a stronger book: a good map of Vietnam showing the area Mr. McPartlin describes; and a few pictures of all the men in his group. But that not withstanding, this is a very readable and memorable book written by a combatant as seen through the eyes of a medic. A truly unique writing from one who not only took lives, but saved lives.
Semper Fi.

All his life, Greg McPartlin wanted to be a Marine corpsman, a medic skilled at saving lives. Three months of "bagging-and-tagging" bodies during Vietnam's Tet Offensive took the luster off being a Marine-but not off McPartlin's desire to serve his country. After assisting in the sea-recovery of Apollo 11-the first ship to bring men to the moon-the twenty-year-old McPartlin was redeployed to Vietnam as an elite Navy SEAL. Barred as a medic by the Geneva Convention from the make-or-break training considered vital to service as a Navy SEAL, McPartlin had to show he had what it took. In a war where soldiers partied with their buddies in Saigon one day and crawled through an enemy-infested jungle hell the next, McPartlin proved that he was not only an outstanding medic but a real Navy SEAL-the toughest of the tough. Combat Corpsman is McPartlin's account of his year in what had been a Viet Cong stronghold until the SEALs took control. It's the first inside story of a Navy SEAL medic, a man who wanted to heal-not to kill-but did both to save lives.

The 21st Century Sniper: A Complete Practical Guide Review

The 21st Century Sniper: A Complete Practical Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No, I did not get the buzz words backwards. Supposedly a practical guide, this book makes use of a large font and copious whitespace to fill it out. There is a lot of general background information that may be of interest to someone unfamiliar with firearms, but again is primarily padding to cover up the paucity of usable information.
For example, there is a chapter on optics. We learn valuable information like the reticle should look like a 'T' and not an 'X' and if you shake the rifle and the scope rattles around, it probably won't be accurate. Mil dot reticles are mentioned, but if you are interested in using them for range estimation, look someplace else. There is no discussion of other reticle types like the BCD versions or why different patterns may be useful in some situations. Other than a suggestion to make sure they are tight, no information is provided on mounts or such details as lapping the rings to avoid distorting the optics tube. Want to know the advantages or disadvantages of variable power scopes and fixed power, go someplace else. Should you have a question about what a 20 MOA base is and why you might want to use it, ask elsewhere. Confused about 40 or 50 mm objectives? Good luck. Want to know how to come up with a solution and dial it into your scope? Yeah, right.
The other topics in the book get the same gloss. If you want a book to give to your Aunt Mary who has expressed a mild interest in what snipers do, this is it. If you are interested in practical advice for long range precision shooting, save your money.

Before I get accused of plagarism, I have to state that I DID NOT write the book - I wrote the workout portion and added some helpful hints on mental toughness, swimming and wrote the foreword, but I did not write the meat of the book. Nor did I write the tips on rucking - the US Army did...they know rucking better than any of us.
I gave the book five stars because it is good. Mike Mejia is a great fitness writer who added a creative and effective 12 week program to get ready for the advanced 6 weeks workouts I wrote on Army, Navy and Air Force Special Ops training.
The workouts are tested over 2-3 years of clients who successfully completed all of the above training. The workouts work and the info on SOCOM is a plus...

Warrior Mindset Review

Warrior Mindset
Average Reviews:

Well as you may have already guessed from the title of this review that, I consider this book to be the third installment in the outstanding trilogy, which includes; On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society and On Combat, The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace which focus on the psychology of killing in combat and/or self-defense, which amounts to pretty much the same thing although usually in much different settings and circumstances. I guess one could also make the argument that killing during wartime is radically different than in self-defense, but that is an argument best left for another time and forum. I highly recommend that you also purchase and study these two previous volumes along with this one.
When I first started reading this book, I was reminded of a scene from the movie, The Shootist, starring John Wayne and Ron Howard. In this particular scene, Howard asks Wayne (who is playing a very proficient gunfighter who is elderly and dying of cancer) how he had fought so many gun battles over the years against such a wide range of opponents and come out the winner in every one of them. Wayne replies by telling Howard that it wasn't a matter of being the fastest with a gun, or even the best shot, the major factor was being "WILLING TO KILL" another human being without forethought or hesitation.
Most people aren't willing even under the most grave and extreme of circumstances to kill another human being, but there are a few out there that are. Some are criminals and psychopaths, most of them are not!
Anyone who knows anything about actually killing another human being will tell you that killing a human being is actually a fairly easy thing to do physically, but extremely difficult to do psychologically and spiritually (morally).
Now one might think that this book is solely about training the individual person mentally to prepare for and understand the effects of possibly killing another human being. If that person is you, you would be right! Although the contents of this book are a lot more in-depth and go into a lot of detail about a great many subjects that are all intertwined and concerned with the ability of the individual to condition their minds and their souls to face the very real possibility that they may have to, at one time or another, take another human beings life.
Here are just a few of the many things that I really liked about this book:
1. The three outstanding individuals who wrote and/or contributed to this book.
2. The thorough explanation of what physical exertion upon the body does to the mind.
3. How to condition the mind before, during, and after a potential violent confrontation.
4. The breakdown and detailed explanation on how to build a warrior mindset.
5. All of the various mental training techniques.
And a whole lot more!
I HIGHLY recommend this and the other two books in the trilogy to EVERYONE! Regardless of whether or not you are in law enforcement and/or the military, or a practicing martial artist, self-defense advocate, gun enthusiast, or simply someone who doesn't wish to become a victim/statistic at the hands of someone who doesn't adhere to the rules and laws of our society.
The authors of this book have presented you with a detailed lesson plan and blueprint to obtain and toughen YOUR warrior mindset. Now it is up to YOU to do it!
"Perfect mental, spiritual, and physical practice makes for perfect technique, whether it be of body, mind, or spirit."

Down Range: Navy SEALs in the War on Terrorism Review

Down Range: Navy SEALs in the War on Terrorism
Average Reviews:

I bought this book hoping to learn something new about Seals and their missions. What I ended up reading was a cheerleading manual on Seals and SOF in general. I will call that the "rah-rah-rah" factor. There was lots of "they (SOF,USMC,CCTs) are our brothers", "they are real professionals", "we are proud to work with them", and "we'd go to war with them anytime". I even caught a mistake: MOPP (military protective chemical suit) stands for Mission-Oriented Protective Posture. The author gave the wrong info for the acronym. I expect the author to have his facts straight. As usual I recommend the following books: C. Pfarrer's Warrior Soul, E. Haney's Delta Force, Walker's At the Hurricane's Eye, Orr's series on Navy Seals (I think there are 2 worth reading, but don't get the most recent one with all the interviews--uhhh), and Waller's The Commandos. I guess if you are new to the subject of Seals and other SOF this book is ok, but otherwise save yourself the money and get more in-depth info from the above books I mentioned.

In America's battle against al-Qaeda and their allies, the goal of the Navy SEALs is to be the best guns in the fight—stealthy, effective, professional, and lethal. Here for the first time is a SEAL insider's battle history of these Special Operations warriors in the war on terrorism. "Down range" is what SEALs in Afghanistan and Iraq call their area of operations. In this new mode of warfare, "down range" can refer to anything from tracking roving bands of al-Qaeda on a remote mountain trail in Afghanistan to taking down an armed compound in Tikrit and rousting holdouts from Saddam Hussein's regime. It could mean interdicting insurgents smuggling car-bomb explosives over the Iraqi-Syrian border or silently boarding a freighter on the high seas at night to enforce an embargo. In other words, "down range" could be anywhere, anytime, under any conditions. In Down Range, author Dick Couch, himself a former Navy SEAL and CIA case officer, uses his unprecedented access to bring the reader firsthand accounts from the warriors in combat during key missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Couch creates a pulse-pounding, detailed narrative of the definitive engagements of this war, while painting an unusually intimate portrait of these warriors in the field. The performance of the SEALs in difficult, changing environments—in the heat of the Afghan desert, in the snow-packed Hindu Kush, on the high seas, and in the urban chaos of Baghdad—has been nothing short of extraordinary. The SEALs, coordinating with other American forces, the CIA, and foreign special operations units like the Polish GROM, have once more shown their genius for improvisation and capacity for courageous action in leading the fight against this new and vicious enemy. The first battle history of its kind, Down Range is a riveting close-up of some of America's finest warriors in action against a deadly foe. Also available as an eBookFrom the Hardcover edition.

The Intuitive Warrior: Lessons from a Navy SEAL on Unleashing Your Hidden Potential Review

The Intuitive Warrior: Lessons from a Navy SEAL on Unleashing Your Hidden Potential
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 193 page book is from 2009/2010. It is about the lessons our author learned as a Navy SEAL, especially the lessons using his well-honed intuition. Michael speaks of how accessing that intuition saved his life and also saved lives of others who have learned to access it. This book is dedicated to "all UDT/SEAL Warriors Past, Present and Future."
Former Navy SEALS will likely LOVE this book, because Michael speaks of the 24 years he spent in the SEALS and the training and experiences he had. Michael was stationed in turbulent places such as Iraq and in places all over the world. I would say the book is about 50 % SEAL experience (including his similar work as an independent security contractor) and about 50 % intuition and other related skills. The "other" might amaze many of you.
Michael explains a little about many of the "other" intuitive-related skills he developed. He mentions martial arts training and how it helped him to improve his mind/energy balance and focus. He speaks of the telepathic abilities he developed, where he could not only read the minds of team members, but also those of enemies. He speaks of an Out-of-Body experience (OBE), of astral projection (being able to see things as if you were in another place), of meditation (and how to do it). He talks about the Law of Attraction (how we attract what we put our attention and energy on), including how synchronistic events interplay in our lives. Michael explains a little about the Mayan culture, the 2012 alignment and energy changes, ancient cultures and beliefs, past lives, Atlantis and Lemuria, angels, ascended masters, and guides, the importance of NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP) (self programming), and getting your ego under control. Michael also taught some of these skills to other SEALS along the way.
You most likely know that SEAL training is probably the toughest training in the world. These men are truly "the elite" warriors. Our author has obviously developed both sides of his brain to the degree that few have or will. He has written this book to share his life-altering experiences with you, and from the perspective of one who MUST maintain razor sharp focus and clearness of mind at all times. This book is about training and utilizing the Warrior's Intuition to the degree and from the perception that few books will cover.
With all that said, Michael is also telling all who will listen and open their minds, that although most of us will never be SEALS, ALL of us can develop these intuitive skills. Wonderful book--small but packed with info--If you will open your mind to the possibility, it can suggest how to get started.
