THis is truly a good game for the PSP. I was amazed at how well I was able to control this game. I could command my teammate almost as easily as I could control myself. Zooming in and out was easy. Aiming was easy. Weapon selection was easy. But here is the problem. The game is easy. The single player game hardley ramps up with any difficulty. Even when you drastically change the dificulty level. The graphics could possibly even be called poor. Finally, there is no major creativity here. Over and over again you do a very similar thing. Go in and take out the bad guys, or go in and save a good guy. Though this is fun, creativity is appreciated. All of that said. This game does have online multiplayer in a big way, and yes it does support voice chat and microphone headset use. Incredible that a PSP game can do this.
Bottom Line: Great game with minor drawbacks.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV Special Edition Review

Sid Meier's Civilization IV Special Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've never played Sid Meier's Civilization and are thinking about buying for the first time, I recommend you read some of the reviews from the previous version Civilization III to get a glimpse of how exciting and breath-taking this game, its concept, and artificial intelligence truly are. If you're a veteran at Civ, THEN LISTEN UP!!!
I ripped open this package as soon as I got it, told my friends & family not to talk to me until Thanksgiving, and basically put my life on hold.
Right from the opening, you are blown away by the higher-grade graphics, details, sounds, and more lively persona of the game. Although many game elements have changed, you will not need to read the manual (who does?) to play. Right away you'll figure out the new console and controls. Starting off, you choose map style, map size, climate, sea level, and the civ – just like Civ III. These are the civs you can play for now (I'm sure there'll be expansion packs later):
Americans
Arabians
Aztecs
Chinese
Egyptians
English
French
Germans
Greeks
Incans
Indians
Japanese
Malinese
Mongolians
Persians
Romans
Russians
Spanish
Unlike Civ III, most of these civs have two leaders that you can choose, which allow another dimension of play. The movements and landscape are incredibly better with 3-D effects that are more colorful. Even down to the borders of the countries, the lines are more creatively contoured.
It's harder to over-expand or quickly expand your cities. In Civ III if you were Chinese, you could beat everyone virtually by getting your population to the point of overwhelming others in production capacity, units, and wealth. Therefore, you have to be more judicious with each city's focus, research, and commitments.
There no longer is a government angle like democracy, fascism, or monarchy. You achieve the governments as part of your research toward civic choices. Similarly, you research pacifism to get towards one of the religions. The religions seem to play a much more incorporated component to the game, but a subtle. The religions are: Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism. So, for example (and I apologize that this isn't politically correct), if Christian Napoleon fights the Persians with Islam, there seems to be a slight difference than Christian Napoleon fights the Taoist Persians, to the extent that religion plays a role. I've tried that combo a few times and continue to get similar statistically significant results. However, certainly for those civs that are keen on religion, you'd better go for it asap!
New military units are all over the place. I played Americans my last time and I noticed the Navy SEAL. That was pretty cool. Also units can now be promoted so their attack rate or defense can be incrementally improved over time. Figure a swordsman beating a Navy SEAL? Also, there are less worries about micromanaging the Workers.
Overall, the game speed is about 2X faster. In other words, what took me 6hrs to achieve in Civ III takes around 3hrs. That makes it more intense playing. You'd better keep you eye on everything.
In short, Fireaxis has done an incredible job. Hands down, the best game ever (ever). Sid Meier, if you're reading this, you are absolutely a master game developer and please NEVER retire!

SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals Review

SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals

PS3 Move bundle: If you don't have the PS3 Move yet, this is a great deal. This is also the ONLY PS3 Move gun peripheral worth buying. Trust me, I tried many of them. It takes some getting used-to, but didn't analog sticks the first time you picked up a PS2 or Xbox controller? Once you get used to the Sharpshooter, it's like second nature. It also feels better holding it and pulling the trigger than any analog controller. It also seems more accurate. There are calibration issues, but not enough to stop me from using this all the time instead of normal controllers. It's just so much more fun!
GAME: GREAT to use with the Sony Sharpshooter gun. That's the reason I bought it. The only other Sharpshooter game worth mentioning is Killzone 3. SOCOM4 is MUCH better to play with the Sharpshooter. 1. It seems more realistic. 2. The calibration seems better. In KZ3, I had to recalibrate every 5 minutes. This one stays more or less calibrated. I do have to recalibrate every so often, or "yank the crosshairs back". Basically, on the fly recalibrating by yanking the controller far left or right off the screen. It is annoying, but works. One downside I did notice: Sometimes, randomly, it doesn't allow you to recalibrate in the options menu. The recalibrate button just is not there...no idea why. So you have to exit and restart the mission. Weird..
The game itself cannot beat titles like MOH or COD as far as gameplay, but it does add a tactical feel. You can control squads instead of being the lone wolf. Sort of like Tom Clancys Rainbow Six games, except not boring...and more fast paced. You also have options on how you want to attack an objective. You can go in stealthy and perform stealth attacks, snipe, or use your teams to setup ambushes. Or you can do what I like to do and just setup overlapping fields of fire and just kill them all from cover, one by one.
Also, please stop comparing this to older SOCOM games. It's a PS3 Move shooter, and a great one. Unfortunately, carrying the SOCOM franchise name which means all the die-hard SOCOM fans out there are going to complain.
Graphics are fine. Not great, but definitely not bad. This won't beat Crysis 2 or KZ3 on graphics, but it IS the best graphics ever seen in a SOCOM game. So if you were/are a SOCOM fan, don't complain and just enjoy it. There are a few glitches, but even Crysis 2 has some. All games do. Overall, the lighting and environments are satisfying to an FPS player like me.
AI: Well...the AI is just completely retarded. Your team will block your line of fire sometimes, or stroll right out into artillery fire. It's ok though, because you can just kill them to keep them out of the way and revive them later. They don't shoot back. A funny way to get around the dumb AI. Or, use them as cannon fodder or bait. They'll do whatever you say, because well, they're completely stupid. The enemies are a little better it seems, and use grenades, cover and can detect you pretty well. They are also very good at killing you, even on normal mode. I tried going "rambo style" and just rushing with machine guns and grenades. You can't. The enemy AI is too good of a shot and knows just where to throw grenades in order to kill you quickly. So all in all, AI is acceptable.
I haven't tried playing this without the Sony Sharpshooter. What's the point? You really won't want to use a regular controller ever again once you've tried this with the Sharpshooter. I've been waiting for a good gun-peripheral shooter to come out since Duck Hunt and the Lightgun on the Nintendo. Time Crisis was just "ok", KZ3 and MAG were decent... But SOCOM 4 is finally it. FINALLY! Now Sony, just fix that damn calibration issue.
P.S. do not even THINK about any other gun attachments than the Sharpshooter. I tried many of them and they are cheaply made and cannot map the buttons via USB like the Sharpshooter does. They are all a waste of money and just take up space in the closet now.
Two things you may want to do: Get a Hogue rubber pistol grip, universal size. These are sold for real guns. I had one lying around and tried it. It's a tight fit, but once it's on, leaves enough room for the second trigger button to work. IE, it doesn't squeeze it. This makes holding the Sharpshooter MUCH more comfortable. It is painful to use for long hours, the pistol grip sleeve helps this.
Put a piece of foam between the Move controller and the plastic cover. If not, the vibration will cause a loud rattling sound. Very annoying.
You may also want a piece of foam stuck below the trigger guard. This is where a lot of the weight rests. Your middle finger will hurt after a while if not. Or use a glove.

I don't own this, but it's worth pointing out that this download/purchase is NOT the game. This does not mean it's a bad purchase, but consumers need to understand what they're getting. SOCOM 3 uses a system that requires you to register your copy online for multiplayer purposes, etc. In other words, this download issues a new copy ID for people who bought the game used or traded it with a friend and need their own login information. So, while you may instinctively think $19.99 means you're getting a code for a full game, please be aware before you buy that this item is ONLY an activation code, and you will also need to own SOCOM 3 for it to be of any use.
To summarize:
You do NOT need this if you own a...
1. Retail copy of SOCOM 3 and are the original owner.
2. Pre-owned copy of SOCOM 3 but have no interest (or capability) of playing online against other people.
You DO need this if you own a USED copy of SOCOM 3 and...
1. Want to register to play online using PSP Wi-Fi mode.
2. Want to play local multiplayer using PSP Ad-Hoc mode.
I hope this information helps.

SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals Fireteam Bravo 2 Review

SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals Fireteam Bravo 2
Average Reviews:

In this game you are a U.S. Navy Seal, the most lethal fighting force in the world. As a seal (SEa Air Land) you work in two man fireteams and are forced to go through a variety of elements. Camoflouged and equiped with real-world weapons. Your arsenal includes assault riffles such as the M16, M4, XM8, SFCR LW and HW, and AK-47 as well as many other types of weapons and explosives. The missions can prove to be difficult and you must learn to use team commands and be extremely stealth. You have your choice of partners, Wrath a master of stealth, Bronco a close range fighter, and Lonestar a sharpshooter. The infacture mode is good but it does have a slight tendancy to freeze. Overall this is a great game combining shooting and stealth, a must-buy for all PSP owners!

PlayStation 2 USB Headset Review

PlayStation 2 USB Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Playstation 2 Headset Microphone by Logitech lets you talk with your online friends, play games with voice commands, and much more!
The Logitech unit has a leather-like padded earpiece on one ear and just a plastic part on the other side to hold the unit on your head. It's relative comfortable, although after an hour or two it can start to be sore. However, if you talk to any receptionist that wears headsets all day long, you'll realize that comfort costs money - if you really want a unit that you can wear all day, you need to pay the money for that kind of unit. This PS2 unit is only $30 or so, and doesn't really qualify.
There's a microphone part that does have an adjustable arm in the sense that you can bend it in and out, but it isn't "extendable", i.e. you can't make it longer or shorter. This might work well for someone with a typical sized head, but if your head happens to be larger or smaller, the microphone won't end up near your mouth.
Some versions of this unit come with a mute, while others don't. Ours doesn't have a mute but I really don't see this as important - any game you play with a microphone comes with some sort of a mute option. We are currently using this unit with Lifeline which is a single person adventure game, so mute really doesn't matter. Other PS2 games with microphones all handle voice issues well.
The unit is pretty sturdy and handles wear well. Like any piece of electronics, you get out of it what you put into it. If you fling it around and step on it, it's going to break. We've treated ours reasonably well, and it's held up quite well in return.
This microphone headset simply plugs into the USB port provided on any PS2 unit. The port is found beneath the regular controller port location.
A great unit if you play games that involve voice commands.

SOCOM 3 U.S. Navy Seals Review

SOCOM 3 U.S. Navy Seals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, I will write my review for the single player portion of the game as I have not played the online portion yet. I have focused on the single player portion only. I enjoy online for the most part but there are too many idiots out there who ruin it by talking smack and cussing like they think it is cool, most of them are kids. Anyways, onto the review.
In the single player portion, you will play in three different locales. Each locale will offer multiple levels up to around 6 or 7, based on how soon you achieve your bonus objectives. If someone escapes who you could have caught as a bonus, then you continue to another level to try to apprehend that suspect again. The missions are nicely laid out and varied this time around. There are vehicles that have been introduced as well that you can drive such as the standard combat boats, buggys, 5 tons and a few others. Weapon lay out is nicely added with multiple weapon combinations that you can use. SOCOM has always been the leader in the realistic approach of special warfare. The bullet impacts in the game are extremely realistic, whether that is hitting the body of the enemy or shooting thru different materials such as glass or crates. The bodies will react to each and every single shot as in real life with the force of impact driving the body in the game. Nice touch to me for realism.
I have to say though that after SOCOM 1 and SOCOM 2, there was a short time frame between those games, only a year, and there was a 2 year hiatus between SOCOM 2 and SOCOM 3 that I would have expected a better gain in graphic performance. While it still looks good, I wished it would have looked slightly better in overall terms. Zipper has gone through a lot of work to get the little details included in the game such as the different sounds of the weapons and the sounds of the different materials they are shot through. This game would have rocked in my opinion even more if they had included the methods of insertion such as scuba diving or sky diving. Would have brought the immersion factor up even more.
The Sony PSP will be gaining the SOCOM Fireteam Bravo for it and from what I have read the two games are supposed to be interoperable by connecting the two console units to one another, but I am not positive on this so it will be interesting to see what comes of that.
All in all SOCOM 3 is a great game and definitely keeps the lead for the best shooter on PS2, and in my opinion one of the best shooters over Xbox as well. The realism is there, the immersion factor is there and the attention to detail is there. At the very least give this game a chance with a game rental. You will most likely be headed for the store when the time comes to return the game and pick up your very own copy. Enjoy.

SOCOM II U.S. Navy Seals Review

SOCOM II U.S. Navy Seals
Average Reviews:

So i put socom I away about 4 months ago- got tired of the cheating, the lagging, the booting. Even still i ran out to buy Socom II- and it was worth the wait.
I jumped on immediatly to online play- never liked the one player game.
Let me just tell you something- the graphics on this game blow away the first- they are insane! There are more new guns too. Which rock. The RPG's for the terrorists make the game that much better. Now your ducking from RPG blasts!
The levels- they are even more insane! Im not to sure about all the names- but here is a breakdown of some of the levels:
First off, all the old favorites are back- with some minor to major improvments.
Blood Lake
Pretty much the same except the graphics are way better and their are turrets now.
Desert Glory
Is back with better graphics and now you can blow up the wall where the terroists are.
Frostfire
is the same- except now all the tunnels connect- cool!
Abanodoned.
This level is messed up now! Its in total darkness! Holy cow this one is fun!
Night Stalker
is now in the day- which has mixed reviews
Rat's Nest
is pretty much the same- but darker.
Death Trap- pretty much the same
OK- now to the new levels. Let me just tell you- these new levels just rock! Some of the names i dont remember or might screw up but here we go:
Requiem
Right off the bat, requiem shows you how awesome Socom II is. The graphics on this level are so tight its incredible. And the level is HUGE. This one is a lot of peoples favorite level right now. Imagine Blizzard in a big town. Did i mention it was in the snow?
Sand Storm
Wow. Is all i have to say about this level. Great fun. Seals try to penetrate the Terroists base- must breach the wall, and blow up their building- but watch out for the air strikes best part of the game!
Shadow Falls
This one shows the imagination of the creators. A huge swamp level in complete darkness. And i mean darkness. The level is so messed up its cool to play- but very hard.
Fox Hunt
Probably my favorite new level. Its an escort level- but takes place in a huge field with grass up to your stomach. One side has a river bed, the other a mountain. You try leading hostages through this without getting em killed! The best is lying in the high grass and picking people off with your M4A1SD.
Crossroads
I beleive thats what it calls- another favorite. Takes place in a town, its a demolition level. Grab the bomb and head for the terroists. The level is huge with many hiding places and houses/stores/restaurants to sneak around in- plus roofs and awnings.
There's another town one- Vigalence- but it has to big the biggest map. Has a weird french/dutch feel to it- but the map is great.
Fish Hook
Fun little level- not that big of a deal.
And theres more and more- but i havent gotten to em all yet.
This game rocks- if you like the first one- get this one- you wont be disappointed...

UPDATE 05-02-11: Giving the title a fourth star for two reasons: First, the U.S. Navy SEALS just killed Osama Bin Laden! That's the ultimate 'Takedown' mission...Go SEALS!! Secondly, I've been logging a lot more time with the game in 'Custom' mode. The no-respawn rule in 'Custom' forces a frustrating, but ultimately highly instructive and tactical rethink of gameplay style that fits with the game design. It's sort of like learning an instrument, frustrating until you 'get it', then it's much more rewarding. The price coming down also helps...a lot.
*****
Let me start out by saying that I'm almost exclusively a First Person Shooter player and almost always on an Xbox. Within just the past week I've logged time on (and have beaten as well) BFBC2, CoD Black Ops, and Crysis 2; I also own and have beaten CoD Modern Warfare, MW2, Red Dead Redemption, etc...
I've just gotten into the PS3 scene to get the killer Blu-Ray player and try some of the exclusive titles on it. The SOCOM series is a PS exclusive. SOCOM4 is my first taste of a shooter on the PS3 and sadly, this game doesn't measure up, and that's too bad. Granted, it's a Third Person Shooter game on the PS3, but more than close enough to compare. Gears of War and RDR are both TPS and awesome.
Having carried a real gun for the 32 years of my entire adult life from 17 to 49 in the military and law enforcement, I wanted to experience something close to actually pointing a weapon in a video game and was excited to try the PS SharpShooter system based on its reviews. I found after pricing the components locally, the SOCOM4 'Full Deployment Edition' with the SharpShooter and all the other PS Move gear actually cost less than just the hardware. Ergo, the game was free - to me. So, if you got the game with the package it is an awesome deal as it's an 'OK' game. I'll review the SharpShooter in its place...although I will say it gets high marks.
As for SOCOM4, I'm not familiar with the earlier titles. They must've been good or we wouldn't be on '4'. Video games are very complex with many layers so I'll try to summarize for times sake:
SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN ONLY:
GAMEPLAY: Linear! I haven't been in a more 'rail shooter' linear game in the past several years...except maybe Mass Effect, but the story there is the game. This is worse than Halo linear; as in on-screen breadcrumb sequential checkpoints that keep you focused more on playing checkpoint baseball and tagging the bases than in mission achievement.
STORY: You're a semi-stranded, cobbled together, *NATO*? Seal team on some island that could cripple global commerce if the rebels take control. I don't want to go into more detail and spoil, but if you get more out of the story your imagination is better than mine and I daydream way too much.
WORLD: I felt almost no need, or desire, to explore the developer's world. Too bad because in many arenas it seemed that the developers went to a lot of artistic trouble to make it look realistic (success) and approachable (fail). The need wasn't there since if they wanted me to see it a checkpoint would run me through it. The desire wasn't there because the game treasures were ho-hum. The ample guns lying around were hard to understand if they were better or worse than mine (frequently worse I found out) and the 'Intel' that you're supposed to pick up never seemed to give me any useful payoffs...so if I saw it, I grabbed it, otherwise I felt no remorse for missing it. I felt no desire to explore or scrounge, neither seemed to be worth the trouble. The set design seemed high until you tried engaging with anything and it just bonked as you tried to scale it, kick it, etc... Well, you could shoot the occasional bucket or the now universal red exploding barrel. If you tried to get an overwatch position to cover your troops while sending them to flank and pincer, you found out that any high ground was almost always unavailable and just a vertical 'wall' to the arena. RDR this is not. The artists did a good job, the graphics are very good and the tradeoffs fair. Good detail, high contrast, great lighting effects, all in all very good. A nice place to visit...
GUNS, BALLISTICS, AND SHOOTING: They did a good job with the guns and most terminal ballistics. The guns were beautifully rendered in game and in cut scenes showing the correct kit for the players. The sights were very well done. Optics were beautiful and real-world accurate - to a point. Reflex reticles were true to life except the fact that the player-side face plates were in focus and quite distracting. They aren't in real life, they are out of focus and only the target and reticle are in focus - as it should be. Small gripe. Shooting with 'irons' in third person is weird, no way around it. It's much weirder when the players own huge and opaque head is frequently in the way because the camera is behind the guy shooting the enemy (you - the player). This only happens when ADS (aiming down sights). You wind up hip shooting like a noob to avoid it. There's no wind or gravity, but hey, again small gripe. Guns with scopes would recoil, but not settle...major gripe and an immersion killer. Shooting with optics moves you into FPS and seemed very good. Especially with the SharpShooter...it felt oddly real when ADS with the SS and using optics, especially scopes. This was and remains the highlight of the game for me...highly recommended for real shooters. You will get a sense of satisfaction that your years of training have FINALLY paid off in a video game; in a way no 'thumb shooter' will understand. Using an ACOG and a SS is not to be missed. Rent the game for that if you already have the gun.
Terminal ballistics and hit boxes seemed right on. A well-placed shot to a critical area was a drop, poor shots resulted in crippled, or semi-functional enemies, as expected. Well done. Black Ops could take a few lessons here. Hits were hits, misses were misses, no mysterious stuff. Sadly it seemed that ANY intermediate object would disable your shot...chain link fencing, leaves, openings between stairs, etc... All can defeat battle rifle caliber rounds and MGs, so sayeth the physics engine they're using. At least a lot of cover was destructible both ways...yet, Battlefield this is not.
AI: SQUAD: AI was good...considering that AI stinks in every game...period. The AI here has pluses (squad are skilled shooters) and minuses (squad hang back a lot and use cover oddly). I'm not usually working squads in game, so I'll be brief here...these guys will do. They are skilled, resilient (more so than the player by far), and fairly intuitive. They usually follow orders and perform better than most friendlies.
ENEMIES: Average. Enemies are appropriately skilled for the middle levels. Behavior patterns were fairly locked and predictable (weak cover skills) with some pleasant surprises (would flank or bum rush). Lethality was game-fair. Odd shots would hurt you, head shots would kill you. Enemies weren't super shooters, but weren't bullet spraying shopkeepers either. Enemy observation skills were highly variable. Sometimes you could sneak past them while looking into their eyes, or they wouldn't notice the 200 lb body you just shot landing on a tin roof next to them. Other times they would see you stealth kill a dude in the dark from a block down the street. Hard to figure.
ACTING: The acting is first rate. Voice acting is well done and usually appropriate with only occasional F-bombs. The characters don't have dramatic stories or parts, so this probably wasn't hard to get right. Motion capture looked realistic and they obviously hired real operators for some of the stuff based on movement patterns. Overall well done...a nice cake of few ingredients.
I'll add more as I wrap up the game...I just got it yesterday, but if you don't post right away nobody will see it. I might do the Multi-Player. For right now the campaign at least seems like a great training range for the SharpShooter community and little else. The story won't make you feel like you have to save the world, or your teammates (I don't even know their names hours later and don't get worked up when something happens to them), and even the PC seems like your cookie-cutter OCS Seal O-3; I've yet to identify with my own PC. He's no John Marston that's for sure. Gameplay is very dated, graphics and gunwork are good, but the effort is lost on mediocrity elsewhere. So far it's been your average garage sale...some neat stuff lost and surrounded by a bunch of same 'ole.
UPDATE: Finished the game and stand by the above review and rating...although I did shoot through a leaf, a fence, and a piece of corrugated steel to get some non-fatal hits on enemies. The game ran 10 hours with a rather casual pace and plenty of do-overs on my part. I like to experiment in-game and this results in a fair amount of 'don't do that again' deaths. Usually when playing a top-notch title, I get really antsy to get back into the game when I have to put it down to deal with real life...I didn't have those joneses with this title. The 'Custom Game' feature is pretty cool and backs up my estimation that the biggest value the game offers is as a training aid for SharpShooter practice. In 'Custom', you can pick maps, game types, and enemy bot skill levels to practice against...think: Black Ops Combat Training and you'll have a great notion of the feature.
MULTIPLAYER: Can't say...PSN remains hacked and has been down all week.

I bought this guide having been impressed by the Diablo II and Jedi Knight II walk throughs. I will say, that this book is better than having nothing, but not much better.
I agree with the other posters who stated that there are misprints, pieces that are just flat out wrong, and incorrect screen captures. Further, when they did get it right, it seems like the advice was too general - they're just poorly organized. I'd have to re-read sections just to see what they were talking about. You can tell someone rushed to make it to print. Shame of you guys...
I'll give an example of what I mean, in Mission 7, the walk through states (essentially) go through and destroy the munitions dumps first then kill the escaping mercs. However, everytime I did that, I'd never make it to killing them all off - they'd escape at the last minute, thus failing the mission. Very frustrating. So, I did the opposite of what the guide suggested. I killed all the soliders first THEN destroyed the munitions dumps and success!
Don't waste your money - you can probably find better advice for free online.

Combat Task Force 121 Review

Combat Task Force 121

The $20 price on this game was attractive, but I almost didn't buy it cause I have the mentality that if a game gets released at a $20 price tag...it can't be very good, but I decided to give it a chance (cause I have made plenty of $50 mistakes, so I figured $20 isn't much of a loss) and bought it to play on Xbox Live since all I've been playing is Counter Strike for the past year, and let me tell you, it was worth every penny! If I would have spent $30 on this game, I still would have felt like it was money well spent.
Pros- Good level selection with awesome layouts, many different gaming modes including: death match, team death match, capture the flag, king of the hill (there are a few more, but these are the ones i've tried so far), realistic weapons, tight controls.
Cons- There should be a few more weapons to choose from, the movement of your player just isn't quick enough, no custom sound track, ps2 like load times, graphics are a little choppy at times.
I haven't tried the 1 player mode yet, but it should be pretty solid based upon the fun factor of the multiplayer.
If you're into realistic 1st person shooters on Live like Counter Strike & the war shooters, definately check this one out. It's only a measley $20...you won't regret it!
I really hope that this game is a success, and Groove Games releases more shooters like this in the future.

After years of simmering unrest, Marxist Rebels have obtained a foothold within the Armed Services and found sympathetic comrades to lend both a voice and weapons. While a full-blown coup d'etat is not yet underway, a few early high profile rebel victories could quickly turn the tide. US forces have been called in to put a halt to these terrorist acts. You are a member of task force 121, an elite cover unit comprised of Navy Seals, Green Berets, Army Rangers and USMC Recon personnel. Your mission is to thwart the Marxist Rebels before they can recruit allies and significantly damage US interests.

I bought this book with high hopes.. Some (if not all) of the previous SOCOM guides have received poor reviews, but since this book has the online content written by a supposed SOCOM "clan", I figured they'd do justice to the online playing portion of the game. If you are the type of player who likes SOCOM for the single player mode, or even playing the single player mode with 3 other friends (online, cooperative mode), then this book looks like it will make you very very happy.
If, however, you are like me, and pretty much only play SOCOM to go online ("classic" mode) and join a team of internet folks to kick some tail of the other team online, you will certainly be disappointed. There is little to no information (in my opinion) that you could take from this book for online "classic" play that isn't already in the manual. It does contain maps of the classic mode multiplayer online locations, but they are roughly postage stamp size, and are of no help for use while you are playing (or even when you are not playing! Just too small!) The publisher promised full-size maps on their website, and when I logged in I saw none, and I looked thoroughly.
I just can't recommend this book for anyone unless you play single player only, or cooperative mode, which I'd guess is the vast minority of players.

SOCOM: US Navy Seals Review

SOCOM: US Navy Seals

I encountered this game at this year's E3 and, I must say, I was very impressed. PS2 owners have been anticipating both online game play and this game for awhile now and it's nice to see both finally surface.
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs takes full advantage of online gameplay, featuring a 16 multiplayer mode, 3 game types in 12 online multiplayer maps that were created specifically for online play, persistent servers, and great clan support. The game is only available to broadband users for online play because of the rich gameplay, which should significantly cut the lag time so many other games have a problem with. Even better, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs is free to play online.
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs is perhaps one of the most lifelike FPS to develop, with Sony using actual SEALs for consulting purposes. The missions, movements, tactics and SEALs themselves are true to life and unparalleled. The weapons, which you can carry two of at a time, are realistically accurate and react to real-life factors like fatigue, movement and weapon recoil.
But for the majority, the most anticipated feature of SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs is the headset that is bundled with the game ... It boasts voice recognition capabilities that will come in quite handy during the game, as it's hard to shoot down terrorists while typing on a keyboard. Shout to your teammates for help and they'll (hopefully) come to your aide, all with minimal lag time. During single-player mode, enemies will also react to your vocal commands.
Overall, this is an excellent FPS. From the previews and gameplay at E3, I have not one single complaint about the game. It's fun, exciting, and has great replay value. Dial-up users will be disappointed that the game is only available to broadband users for online play, but that feature will only help the game, making it much more enjoyable to play over the internet without huge delays.

Story In SOCOM US Navy Seals Fireteam Bravo 3 you lead your SEAL Fireteamin an action-packed special op hunt for weapons of mass destruction andan ex-KGB agent located in a fictional war-torn former Soviet republic.Alexander Gozorov is a man that does not want to be found, an ex-KGB agentwith ties to the Russian Mafia, he has killed everyone we have sent to findhim. Gozorov is believed to have information on a major imminent attackagainst western interests. Time is running out and your 4-man team of USNavy Seals is sent in to track him down. Gameplay As with any tactical shooter, Fireteam Bravo 3 is all about squad-basedcombat. In single player action the player is in charge of a four-manNavy SEAL team on a clandestine mission in the fictional Balkanized republicof Koratvia. Being that the Seals are interfering in an internal conflicton foreign soil, plausible deniability on the part of the US governmentis built into the storyline. This affects the way the game is played inthat objectives and support, although clear and present, are not as heavilysupported be intel, audio communications with superiors or extensive weaponryprovided from the beginning of the game as in other games. Instead, briefingsare provided through brief cinematics and most of the game's 70+ weaponsand items can either be found, taken off enemies or purchased using "CommandEquity" points, which as in the previous Fireteam Bravo game, areawarded for objective completion. In the end, what this means is thatplayers will be flying by the seat of your pants more than in previousgame releases, but also have more perceived freedom of play. Fireteam Bravo 3 also features a number of new combat features. First, players have more choice in how they command. A full command option, where the precise actions of each member of the team against a common target is available, but they can also defer specific commands to perform coordinated attacks on different targets. The game also features an improved cover system that allows you to target and fire at enemies from behind cover, minimizing the damage that you take. You also have the ability to quick toss grenades, instead of having to focus your trajectory. Finally, Fireteam Bravo 3 also features a regenerating health system, allowing players to regain life if they can survive incoming fire and the visual fogginess that engulfs a wounded fireteam member.. Multiplayer Support and Modes One of the areas where Fireteam Bravo 3 shines is in multiplayer. Players will enjoy 2-16 player wireless multiplayer game support, across eight game maps, both via ad hoc and infrastructure connections. Full four-player co-op is also available, with all the combat tactics available in single player campaign. Push-to-talk mic support is available for squad member communication, as well as replacement AI character availability if a player chooses to drop out of a co-op game. Along with Team Deathmatch and Demolition modes from earlier Fireteam Bravo releases, players also have access to new modes: Tug of War, where teams must hold specific positions to gather points; and Leader, in which a team member designated as leader is moved to a specific location while under enemy fire. The player who takes out this leader becomes the new leader, with his/her teammates taking on the role of protectors as the mode starts over. Customization Fireteam Bravo 3 allows for maximum customization, both in singleplayer and multiplayer modes. In single player you are able to customizeyour weapons and those of your squad with a variety of accessories, includingscopes, silencers and under barrel attachments. In multiplayer, customizationis taken even further with the ability to choose from a variety of specialforces, including the KSK, Korean 707, Australian SASR, as well as tocreate specific tags, uniform colors, etc. Player's friends lists fromPlayStation Network can also be imported into the game so you know whenand where friends are playing.
