PS3 Move bundle: If you don't have the PS3 Move yet, this is a great deal. This is also the ONLY PS3 Move gun peripheral worth buying. Trust me, I tried many of them. It takes some getting used-to, but didn't analog sticks the first time you picked up a PS2 or Xbox controller? Once you get used to the Sharpshooter, it's like second nature. It also feels better holding it and pulling the trigger than any analog controller. It also seems more accurate. There are calibration issues, but not enough to stop me from using this all the time instead of normal controllers. It's just so much more fun!
GAME: GREAT to use with the Sony Sharpshooter gun. That's the reason I bought it. The only other Sharpshooter game worth mentioning is Killzone 3. SOCOM4 is MUCH better to play with the Sharpshooter. 1. It seems more realistic. 2. The calibration seems better. In KZ3, I had to recalibrate every 5 minutes. This one stays more or less calibrated. I do have to recalibrate every so often, or "yank the crosshairs back". Basically, on the fly recalibrating by yanking the controller far left or right off the screen. It is annoying, but works. One downside I did notice: Sometimes, randomly, it doesn't allow you to recalibrate in the options menu. The recalibrate button just is not there...no idea why. So you have to exit and restart the mission. Weird..
The game itself cannot beat titles like MOH or COD as far as gameplay, but it does add a tactical feel. You can control squads instead of being the lone wolf. Sort of like Tom Clancys Rainbow Six games, except not boring...and more fast paced. You also have options on how you want to attack an objective. You can go in stealthy and perform stealth attacks, snipe, or use your teams to setup ambushes. Or you can do what I like to do and just setup overlapping fields of fire and just kill them all from cover, one by one.
Also, please stop comparing this to older SOCOM games. It's a PS3 Move shooter, and a great one. Unfortunately, carrying the SOCOM franchise name which means all the die-hard SOCOM fans out there are going to complain.
Graphics are fine. Not great, but definitely not bad. This won't beat Crysis 2 or KZ3 on graphics, but it IS the best graphics ever seen in a SOCOM game. So if you were/are a SOCOM fan, don't complain and just enjoy it. There are a few glitches, but even Crysis 2 has some. All games do. Overall, the lighting and environments are satisfying to an FPS player like me.
AI: Well...the AI is just completely retarded. Your team will block your line of fire sometimes, or stroll right out into artillery fire. It's ok though, because you can just kill them to keep them out of the way and revive them later. They don't shoot back. A funny way to get around the dumb AI. Or, use them as cannon fodder or bait. They'll do whatever you say, because well, they're completely stupid. The enemies are a little better it seems, and use grenades, cover and can detect you pretty well. They are also very good at killing you, even on normal mode. I tried going "rambo style" and just rushing with machine guns and grenades. You can't. The enemy AI is too good of a shot and knows just where to throw grenades in order to kill you quickly. So all in all, AI is acceptable.
I haven't tried playing this without the Sony Sharpshooter. What's the point? You really won't want to use a regular controller ever again once you've tried this with the Sharpshooter. I've been waiting for a good gun-peripheral shooter to come out since Duck Hunt and the Lightgun on the Nintendo. Time Crisis was just "ok", KZ3 and MAG were decent... But SOCOM 4 is finally it. FINALLY! Now Sony, just fix that damn calibration issue.
P.S. do not even THINK about any other gun attachments than the Sharpshooter. I tried many of them and they are cheaply made and cannot map the buttons via USB like the Sharpshooter does. They are all a waste of money and just take up space in the closet now.
Two things you may want to do: Get a Hogue rubber pistol grip, universal size. These are sold for real guns. I had one lying around and tried it. It's a tight fit, but once it's on, leaves enough room for the second trigger button to work. IE, it doesn't squeeze it. This makes holding the Sharpshooter MUCH more comfortable. It is painful to use for long hours, the pistol grip sleeve helps this.
Put a piece of foam between the Move controller and the plastic cover. If not, the vibration will cause a loud rattling sound. Very annoying.
You may also want a piece of foam stuck below the trigger guard. This is where a lot of the weight rests. Your middle finger will hurt after a while if not. Or use a glove.

Delta Force: Task Force Dagger Review

Delta Force: Task Force Dagger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Delta Force: Task Force Dagger is the next in the line of, so far, 3 other Delta Force games, the last being Land Warrior and the next, Black Hawk Down. All have been created mainly by Novalogic, but this time they are being assisted by Zomebie Studios.
Ok, now to the good stuff! Task Force Dagger is supposed to contain about 30 new weapons, and 25 new missions, but probably one of the coolest features is that you can choose from different types of characters, not just gunner, sniper, cqb, medic, nader, from Land Warrior, but things such as SEALS, Army Rangers, and, of course, Delta Force operatives. The enourmous levels given out by Novalogic and enourmous servers hosting countless numbers of players won't stop in this game either.
The game was planned to be released on May 22nd i believe, but was pushed back until June 26th, and God knows why Amazon but nobody else has it, so it may be better to wait a little while before purchasing the game, because the only real point to buy the game is for the multiplayer ability.
Stats are recorded. Your time in the hill, number of flags captured, kills, shots, everything. That is one awesome feature, and the better your statistics are, the higher you move up in rank. The single player game is the only weakness of the franchise, enemies have never been very smart, and a simple one shot with the pistol in the leg can take an enemy down. More teamwork could be used in the missions as well as other features, but the co-operative mode can be a blast, but can be pretty dull sometimes.
The game comes with a mission editor in which levels can be created by the public and played on Novaworld. That is also an interesting feature that proves to be very beneficial, even though the maps created by Novaworld are also pretty wonderful.
This game has got to be one of the greatest multiplayer marvels of all time, and will give the various Star Wars and other multiplayer games a run for their money, with almost all players that have Land Warrior already hellbent on picking up this next game in the popular series.
The only down side is the single player missions, but users can also create their own, and multiplayer is all you'll really do once you get the game. It's a great game and i recommend you to purchase it.

SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals
Average Reviews:

UPDATE 05-02-11: Giving the title a fourth star for two reasons: First, the U.S. Navy SEALS just killed Osama Bin Laden! That's the ultimate 'Takedown' mission...Go SEALS!! Secondly, I've been logging a lot more time with the game in 'Custom' mode. The no-respawn rule in 'Custom' forces a frustrating, but ultimately highly instructive and tactical rethink of gameplay style that fits with the game design. It's sort of like learning an instrument, frustrating until you 'get it', then it's much more rewarding. The price coming down also helps...a lot.
*****
Let me start out by saying that I'm almost exclusively a First Person Shooter player and almost always on an Xbox. Within just the past week I've logged time on (and have beaten as well) BFBC2, CoD Black Ops, and Crysis 2; I also own and have beaten CoD Modern Warfare, MW2, Red Dead Redemption, etc...
I've just gotten into the PS3 scene to get the killer Blu-Ray player and try some of the exclusive titles on it. The SOCOM series is a PS exclusive. SOCOM4 is my first taste of a shooter on the PS3 and sadly, this game doesn't measure up, and that's too bad. Granted, it's a Third Person Shooter game on the PS3, but more than close enough to compare. Gears of War and RDR are both TPS and awesome.
Having carried a real gun for the 32 years of my entire adult life from 17 to 49 in the military and law enforcement, I wanted to experience something close to actually pointing a weapon in a video game and was excited to try the PS SharpShooter system based on its reviews. I found after pricing the components locally, the SOCOM4 'Full Deployment Edition' with the SharpShooter and all the other PS Move gear actually cost less than just the hardware. Ergo, the game was free - to me. So, if you got the game with the package it is an awesome deal as it's an 'OK' game. I'll review the SharpShooter in its place...although I will say it gets high marks.
As for SOCOM4, I'm not familiar with the earlier titles. They must've been good or we wouldn't be on '4'. Video games are very complex with many layers so I'll try to summarize for times sake:
SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN ONLY:
GAMEPLAY: Linear! I haven't been in a more 'rail shooter' linear game in the past several years...except maybe Mass Effect, but the story there is the game. This is worse than Halo linear; as in on-screen breadcrumb sequential checkpoints that keep you focused more on playing checkpoint baseball and tagging the bases than in mission achievement.
STORY: You're a semi-stranded, cobbled together, *NATO*? Seal team on some island that could cripple global commerce if the rebels take control. I don't want to go into more detail and spoil, but if you get more out of the story your imagination is better than mine and I daydream way too much.
WORLD: I felt almost no need, or desire, to explore the developer's world. Too bad because in many arenas it seemed that the developers went to a lot of artistic trouble to make it look realistic (success) and approachable (fail). The need wasn't there since if they wanted me to see it a checkpoint would run me through it. The desire wasn't there because the game treasures were ho-hum. The ample guns lying around were hard to understand if they were better or worse than mine (frequently worse I found out) and the 'Intel' that you're supposed to pick up never seemed to give me any useful payoffs...so if I saw it, I grabbed it, otherwise I felt no remorse for missing it. I felt no desire to explore or scrounge, neither seemed to be worth the trouble. The set design seemed high until you tried engaging with anything and it just bonked as you tried to scale it, kick it, etc... Well, you could shoot the occasional bucket or the now universal red exploding barrel. If you tried to get an overwatch position to cover your troops while sending them to flank and pincer, you found out that any high ground was almost always unavailable and just a vertical 'wall' to the arena. RDR this is not. The artists did a good job, the graphics are very good and the tradeoffs fair. Good detail, high contrast, great lighting effects, all in all very good. A nice place to visit...
GUNS, BALLISTICS, AND SHOOTING: They did a good job with the guns and most terminal ballistics. The guns were beautifully rendered in game and in cut scenes showing the correct kit for the players. The sights were very well done. Optics were beautiful and real-world accurate - to a point. Reflex reticles were true to life except the fact that the player-side face plates were in focus and quite distracting. They aren't in real life, they are out of focus and only the target and reticle are in focus - as it should be. Small gripe. Shooting with 'irons' in third person is weird, no way around it. It's much weirder when the players own huge and opaque head is frequently in the way because the camera is behind the guy shooting the enemy (you - the player). This only happens when ADS (aiming down sights). You wind up hip shooting like a noob to avoid it. There's no wind or gravity, but hey, again small gripe. Guns with scopes would recoil, but not settle...major gripe and an immersion killer. Shooting with optics moves you into FPS and seemed very good. Especially with the SharpShooter...it felt oddly real when ADS with the SS and using optics, especially scopes. This was and remains the highlight of the game for me...highly recommended for real shooters. You will get a sense of satisfaction that your years of training have FINALLY paid off in a video game; in a way no 'thumb shooter' will understand. Using an ACOG and a SS is not to be missed. Rent the game for that if you already have the gun.
Terminal ballistics and hit boxes seemed right on. A well-placed shot to a critical area was a drop, poor shots resulted in crippled, or semi-functional enemies, as expected. Well done. Black Ops could take a few lessons here. Hits were hits, misses were misses, no mysterious stuff. Sadly it seemed that ANY intermediate object would disable your shot...chain link fencing, leaves, openings between stairs, etc... All can defeat battle rifle caliber rounds and MGs, so sayeth the physics engine they're using. At least a lot of cover was destructible both ways...yet, Battlefield this is not.
AI: SQUAD: AI was good...considering that AI stinks in every game...period. The AI here has pluses (squad are skilled shooters) and minuses (squad hang back a lot and use cover oddly). I'm not usually working squads in game, so I'll be brief here...these guys will do. They are skilled, resilient (more so than the player by far), and fairly intuitive. They usually follow orders and perform better than most friendlies.
ENEMIES: Average. Enemies are appropriately skilled for the middle levels. Behavior patterns were fairly locked and predictable (weak cover skills) with some pleasant surprises (would flank or bum rush). Lethality was game-fair. Odd shots would hurt you, head shots would kill you. Enemies weren't super shooters, but weren't bullet spraying shopkeepers either. Enemy observation skills were highly variable. Sometimes you could sneak past them while looking into their eyes, or they wouldn't notice the 200 lb body you just shot landing on a tin roof next to them. Other times they would see you stealth kill a dude in the dark from a block down the street. Hard to figure.
ACTING: The acting is first rate. Voice acting is well done and usually appropriate with only occasional F-bombs. The characters don't have dramatic stories or parts, so this probably wasn't hard to get right. Motion capture looked realistic and they obviously hired real operators for some of the stuff based on movement patterns. Overall well done...a nice cake of few ingredients.
I'll add more as I wrap up the game...I just got it yesterday, but if you don't post right away nobody will see it. I might do the Multi-Player. For right now the campaign at least seems like a great training range for the SharpShooter community and little else. The story won't make you feel like you have to save the world, or your teammates (I don't even know their names hours later and don't get worked up when something happens to them), and even the PC seems like your cookie-cutter OCS Seal O-3; I've yet to identify with my own PC. He's no John Marston that's for sure. Gameplay is very dated, graphics and gunwork are good, but the effort is lost on mediocrity elsewhere. So far it's been your average garage sale...some neat stuff lost and surrounded by a bunch of same 'ole.
UPDATE: Finished the game and stand by the above review and rating...although I did shoot through a leaf, a fence, and a piece of corrugated steel to get some non-fatal hits on enemies. The game ran 10 hours with a rather casual pace and plenty of do-overs on my part. I like to experiment in-game and this results in a fair amount of 'don't do that again' deaths. Usually when playing a top-notch title, I get really antsy to get back into the game when I have to put it down to deal with real life...I didn't have those joneses with this title. The 'Custom Game' feature is pretty cool and backs up my estimation that the biggest value the game offers is as a training aid for SharpShooter practice. In 'Custom', you can pick maps, game types, and enemy bot skill levels to practice against...think: Black Ops Combat Training and you'll have a great notion of the feature.
MULTIPLAYER: Can't say...PSN remains hacked and has been down all week.

Combat: Task Force 121 Review

Combat: Task Force 121

This game is pretty lame. In easy mode you only have to shoot somewhere in the vicinity of the enemy and you will kill him but in normal mode it takes multiple hits to kill him. The enemy somehow is able to shoot through things and you can't. Movement is very restricted as you can only go on the designated path due to the invisible walls all over the place. If you can get it from the bargain bin and want something pretty easy and quick to play, this game may be acceptable but if you are used to COD quality, save your money.

SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals: Combined Assault Review

SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals: Combined Assault
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The newest version of Socom does something many wanted in Socom 3, it includes the previous version's, Socom 3, online game. So many gamers who bought Socom 3 wanted to play Socom 2 maps online that Zipper released a map pack with Socom 2 maps and plans to release another soon. Zipper avoided that with this version by including all the Socom 3 maps and allowing you to play people with Socom 3 online. GREAT!!
This newest version of Socom, many think, is the hardest yet. The computer controlled enemy (called Mercinaries) is much smarter, harder to kill and their aim is dead on. Many complained about how easy Socom 3 was to defeat. This new version at the toughest level will have at least a couple of missions that will challange even top players.
You can play the game in more then one mode. You can go through the game in Campaign Mode both offline, and with up to 3 others, online at 3 levels of difficulty (Ensign, Commander and Admiral). You can do "Instant Action" Games on or offline which are one level missions (levels you have already played) with goals such as capturing the enemy leader, recovering a briefcase, etc.. You can also of course, play in online games with up to 32 players like the previous versions.
New for Combined Assault: Badges. Previous versions had goodies like grips and weapons that were unlocked by beating the entire game at different levels. Now to unlock items you need a certain number of badges. Badges are awarded for doing different things in the game like a certain amount of kills with a certain type of weapon as well as beating the entire game at a certain level.
New for the game. Triangles now appear over team mates heads and can be seen through walls. This helps in reducing friendly fire kills and in seeing where your team is in relation to you. When a team member is killed their triangle slowly fades out so you can see where that happened. This new feature also was updated to those playing Socom 3 online. Also new is a few new weapons. Some need to be unlocked. Perhaps the most used new weapon is for the Seals, the MG36, a light machine gun.
Overall, if you liked Socom 3 you will enjoy the new maps and the ability to play Socom 3 maps online with your same account information. The feel and play is pretty much the same as Socom 3 online but there are a couple of minor changes such as new sounds.
I am giving the game a 4 because there are a couple of things they need to fix. The patch to make Socom 3's voice system compatible with Combined Assualt always on hotmike (in Co-Op mode) has made non-Co-Op voice chat work for only some of the players some of the time. It most likely is an issue where players with a slower connection can't talk or hear in large map game play. I have yet to play a Co-Op game where the hot mike has not worked, but there have been many games where voices lag and echo in other players mics and that can be annoying. Also, when a player on your Friends or Clan List is in Co-Op mode and in a password game you can't enter the password and join the game plus you don't know what server they are on to find them and enter the game. There are also some software code bugs that if you play long enough you will run into like not being able to set a charge on a structure that you are required to blow up to complete the map or your offline teammates won't follow you. Plus there are a couple of things I thought the game still needs like if you get shot while getting ready to throw a hand grenade you should drop it where you are and it should explode.
Overall its a great extention of Socom 3 that has more difficult and engaging gameplay that forces players to relie on skill and brains.
UPDATE 11/2007
More then a year after its announced release, the second online Map Pack was released this month online for $5.99. It contains several maps from Socom 2. This last Map Pack has brought many players back to the game. Those hoping for the next installment of the game for PS3 that was supposed to be released around this time now at least have some different maps to play on until next year's new version is released.
UPDATE 5/09 While I haven't played this version in a year and a half, I learned not long ago that there was a final update and a free map pack released for this version of SOCOM before the release of SOCOM: US Navy Seals Confrontation Stand Alone last summer. Since its (too early) release Confrontation has gone from almost unplayable to stable but there has been no Map Packs released yet for Confrontation. Those with the backwards compatible PS3's may want to pick up this discounted bargain while waiting for new content to be released for Confrontation.

SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault Signature Series Guide (Bradygames Signature Series)

I bought this book with high hopes.. Some (if not all) of the previous SOCOM guides have received poor reviews, but since this book has the online content written by a supposed SOCOM "clan", I figured they'd do justice to the online playing portion of the game. If you are the type of player who likes SOCOM for the single player mode, or even playing the single player mode with 3 other friends (online, cooperative mode), then this book looks like it will make you very very happy.
If, however, you are like me, and pretty much only play SOCOM to go online ("classic" mode) and join a team of internet folks to kick some tail of the other team online, you will certainly be disappointed. There is little to no information (in my opinion) that you could take from this book for online "classic" play that isn't already in the manual. It does contain maps of the classic mode multiplayer online locations, but they are roughly postage stamp size, and are of no help for use while you are playing (or even when you are not playing! Just too small!) The publisher promised full-size maps on their website, and when I logged in I saw none, and I looked thoroughly.
I just can't recommend this book for anyone unless you play single player only, or cooperative mode, which I'd guess is the vast minority of players.

SOCOM: US Navy Seals Review

SOCOM: US Navy Seals
Average Reviews:

I encountered this game at this year's E3 and, I must say, I was very impressed. PS2 owners have been anticipating both online game play and this game for awhile now and it's nice to see both finally surface.
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs takes full advantage of online gameplay, featuring a 16 multiplayer mode, 3 game types in 12 online multiplayer maps that were created specifically for online play, persistent servers, and great clan support. The game is only available to broadband users for online play because of the rich gameplay, which should significantly cut the lag time so many other games have a problem with. Even better, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs is free to play online.
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs is perhaps one of the most lifelike FPS to develop, with Sony using actual SEALs for consulting purposes. The missions, movements, tactics and SEALs themselves are true to life and unparalleled. The weapons, which you can carry two of at a time, are realistically accurate and react to real-life factors like fatigue, movement and weapon recoil.
But for the majority, the most anticipated feature of SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs is the headset that is bundled with the game ... It boasts voice recognition capabilities that will come in quite handy during the game, as it's hard to shoot down terrorists while typing on a keyboard. Shout to your teammates for help and they'll (hopefully) come to your aide, all with minimal lag time. During single-player mode, enemies will also react to your vocal commands.
Overall, this is an excellent FPS. From the previews and gameplay at E3, I have not one single complaint about the game. It's fun, exciting, and has great replay value. Dial-up users will be disappointed that the game is only available to broadband users for online play, but that feature will only help the game, making it much more enjoyable to play over the internet without huge delays.

In single player action the player is in charge of a four-manNavy SEAL team on a clandestine mission in the fictional Balkanized republicof Koratvia. Being that the Seals are interfering in an internal conflicton foreign soil, plausible deniability on the part of the US governmentis built into the storyline. This affects the way the game is played inthat objectives and support, although clear and present, are not as heavilysupported be intel, audio communications with superiors or extensive weaponryprovided from the beginning of the game as in other games. Instead, briefingsare provided through brief cinematics and most of the game's 70+ weaponsand items can either be found, taken off enemies or purchased using "CommandEquity" points, which as in the previous Fireteam Bravo game, areawarded for objective completion. In the end, what this means is thatplayers will be flying by the seat of your pants more than in previousgame releases, but also have more perceived freedom of play. Fireteam Bravo 3 also features a number of new combat features. First, players have more choice in how they command. A full command option, where the precise actions of each member of the team against a common target is available, but they can also defer specific commands to perform coordinated attacks on different targets. The game also features an improved cover system that allows you to target and fire at enemies from behind cover, minimizing the damage that you take. You also have the ability to quick toss grenades, instead of having to focus your trajectory. Finally, Fireteam Bravo 3 also features a regenerating health system, allowing players to regain life if they can survive incoming fire and the visual fogginess that engulfs a wounded fireteam member.. Multiplayer Support and Modes One of the areas where Fireteam Bravo 3 shines is in multiplayer. Players will enjoy 2-16 player wireless multiplayer game support, across eight game maps, both via ad hoc and infrastructure connections. Full four-player co-op is also available, with all the combat tactics available in single player campaign. Push-to-talk mic support is available for squad member communication, as well as replacement AI character availability if a player chooses to drop out of a co-op game. Along with Team Deathmatch and Demolition modes from earlier Fireteam Bravo releases, players also have access to new modes: Tug of War, where teams must hold specific positions to gather points; and Leader, in which a team member designated as leader is moved to a specific location while under enemy fire. The player who takes out this leader becomes the new leader, with his/her teammates taking on the role of protectors as the mode starts over. Customization Fireteam Bravo 3 allows for maximum customization, both in singleplayer and multiplayer modes. In single player you are able to customizeyour weapons and those of your squad with a variety of accessories, includingscopes, silencers and under barrel attachments. In multiplayer, customizationis taken even further with the ability to choose from a variety of specialforces, including the KSK, Korean 707, Australian SASR, as well as tocreate specific tags, uniform colors, etc. Player's friends lists fromPlayStation Network can also be imported into the game so you know whenand where friends are playing.
