(More customer reviews)I have read two other books by the author (Neal SEAL workout, and Master Level Fitness) and this is by far his best book to date, and I rate it BEST IN CLASS. There are so many "SEAL" fit-type books in the marketplace and I have read them all, but this is the very best of all of the ones available to the reader. The book is well-organized, is broken up into separate workouts depending on which branch of service you want to emulate. Workouts are progressive and even though most are based on bodyweight calesthenics, there is an alternate workout that combines weights with calesthenics.
Overall I am very pleased with the book and it was worth the wait.

The main character, LT Jascinski, gave up a promising career as a surface warrior because he wanted to pursue the high-speed low drag world of Navy EOD. In his first billet out of EOD school, he gets all he can handle as he and his team end up in the middle of a world-wide terrorist ring that may just have someone on the inside. Who will have the steady hand, and who will end up as a "big pink mist?"
Phillips writes from experience, and obviously knows what he's talking about. While the story is fiction, the author draws from his years as a Navy EOD Officer-in-Charge to develop the story and provide the technological balance all good military stories need in order to be believable. He also does an excellent job of developing the personal relationships between the LT and his men, the LT and his Chief Petty Officers, and finally the LT and his wife. The result is a fast moving, completely believable action story that's a great read for those who enjoy military fiction, especially Special Operations.

(More customer reviews)John Wolfram's Splashdown is an amazing story of personal courage, conviction, and triumph over a variety of difficult and sometimes life-threatening situations. The section describing his two tours of duty in Vietnam as a US Navy UDT/Seal are especially harrowing. His conversion to Christianity during his Vietnam deployment undoubtedly saved his life. The most interesting part to me, however, is his participation in the recovery of the Apollo 11 astronauts after they splashed down in the Pacific in July 1969. To have been a major player in that vital rescue operation at the end of such a monumental mission must have been an experience of a lifetime. John's writing candidly captures all the ups and downs, and the excitement of the times perfectly. Splashdown is an inspiring book.

Dourado Review

(More customer reviews)Monsieur le Chevalier Louis Domenic de Rienzi is the unluckiest man I know - or at least know of. He has made a discovery that will literally shock the world. It's 1829 and de Rienzi is sailing back to France with a hold full of precious artifacts, including one in particular that will reshape our knowledge of history and of the Bible.
I'm no historian, but I know enough about the power of the early church in Rome to know that anything threatening their stranglehold on religious power would have been met with swift (and often violent) action. In this case, it appears that no action was necessary as nature took a hand in the game and gutted the Dourado, ripping it's hold open with submerged rocks and sending her to the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
And there de Rienzi's treasure lay; undisturbed; until...
Dourado is the first in a series of Dane Maddock adventures. I am a fan of Clive Cussler's 'Dirk Pitt' novels and David Wood's debut is a worthy addition to my list of favorite swashbuckling heroes. There's the hero, Maddock, his irreverent partner Uriah 'Bones' Bonebrake, and the beautiful daughter of a fallen comrade. Oh, and of course, the treasure.
The plot may be somewhat familiar: ex-Navy seals running an underwater salvage team run up against some hard luck on their current project and along comes a beautiful stranger with a tale of fantastic treasure to take the edge off their disappointment. The excitement of this new mission soon wears off though, as more than one mysterious group of very dangerous adversaries begins to take an unhealthy interest in Maddock's business.
Wood's characters in Dourado are fully developed and fit into a believable and entertaining plot very nicely. Maddock has his own secrets that often haunt him at night but the flawed hero is not one to shirk from challenge - or duty. The global locales portrayed in Dourado are three dimensional and inviting, and add an authentic and adventurous spice to the tale.
As the plot builds, the main characters - and a few others - are swept up into an international conspiracy, the pages of Dourado turn as swiftly as the water filled her cargo hold nearly two hundred years ago. The final scenes take place in Petra and could only have been written by someone who has been there - or at least has done a tremendous amount of research.
I can't discuss the final scenes without giving away too much of the story. Suffice it to say that Mr. Wood has crafted an amazing story that combines adventure, faith, history and excitement in equally fascinating measure. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series - Cibola - already available at Amazon.

I originally purchased Mark De Lisle's first book, "Navy SEAL Workout." The results I experienced were nothing less than phenomenal. As soon as I found out that Mark had completed "Breakthrough To Master Level Fitness," I had to have a copy. Breakthrough blows away anything else I have encountered in the fitness market. I have purchased other Navy SEAL workout books and videos but they were either too incomplete or did not sufficiently layout an effective program. Breakthrough however, contains exercises for upper body, legs, cardio workouts, sprints, long distance running, abs and plateau breakers such as Burn Outs, Intervals, and Circuit Training. And with 12 Weeks To Better Than Ever, which lays out routines on a day by day basis, you can't wander off the path to improvement.
With the 12 Weeks, I simply took the evaluation test and checked off each day. The routines were laid out right before me. It even told me when to do my burn outs, intervals and circuits. Taylor's Temptation (Tall, Dark & Dangerous, Book 10) Review

(More customer reviews)Bobby Taylor is a Navy SEAL, and his best friend is his swim buddy, Wes Skelly. As Wes ships out on an assignment, he asks Bobby to go to Boston to look out for his younger sister, Colleen, who is doing stuff that has big brother in overprotective mode. Bobby goes, but is full of reservations because his feelings for Colleen Skelly are far from brotherly. As this is a serial romance novel, you can probably guess where the plot goes from there.
The dialogue is snappy and characters are very well drawn. The conversations between Wes and Bobby, as well as the brief appearances of other SEALs from earlier books work very well.
My only knock would be that we never learn much about Bobby's background and history. Normally I wouldn't notice this, but in all of the other Team Ten Books the heroes had a history that was explained, so its absense was noted here.
There is a good segue to the next book in the series (expected to be Wes' story) at the end. All of the Suz Brockmann fans who have been waiting impatiently for the next installment of her Team Ten books will be pleased with this effort.

The 21st Century Sniper: A Complete Practical Guide Review

(More customer reviews)No, I did not get the buzz words backwards. Supposedly a practical guide, this book makes use of a large font and copious whitespace to fill it out. There is a lot of general background information that may be of interest to someone unfamiliar with firearms, but again is primarily padding to cover up the paucity of usable information.
For example, there is a chapter on optics. We learn valuable information like the reticle should look like a 'T' and not an 'X' and if you shake the rifle and the scope rattles around, it probably won't be accurate. Mil dot reticles are mentioned, but if you are interested in using them for range estimation, look someplace else. There is no discussion of other reticle types like the BCD versions or why different patterns may be useful in some situations. Other than a suggestion to make sure they are tight, no information is provided on mounts or such details as lapping the rings to avoid distorting the optics tube. Want to know the advantages or disadvantages of variable power scopes and fixed power, go someplace else. Should you have a question about what a 20 MOA base is and why you might want to use it, ask elsewhere. Confused about 40 or 50 mm objectives? Good luck. Want to know how to come up with a solution and dial it into your scope? Yeah, right.
The other topics in the book get the same gloss. If you want a book to give to your Aunt Mary who has expressed a mild interest in what snipers do, this is it. If you are interested in practical advice for long range precision shooting, save your money.

The fact that he was undercover added to my illusion of the big bad protector and I just could not get enough of him. Rina's character was the perfect complement to Cash's. While she had reservations about his career, and rightly so, I love how she came to grips with her feelings and was able to make the right choices concerning her relationship with Cash. All in all, Stephanie Tyler has written a sensual, satisfying, and totally enjoyable book with Risking It All. I can't wait to tell my friends about it.

It was a great plot, great couple but she seemed to spend way too much time on background information and not enough on the characters falling in love or even interacting together. They seemed to only speak twice and the love affair wasn't developed. When they first hooked up romantically I looked down and half the book was already read. I like great dialogue that shows a connection between couples and LMR has ALWAYS delivered. I hope that now that she used 3/4 of this book to set up the plot the next two books will focus on the couples interacting together too.

(More customer reviews)The promos for this book are pretty misleading. What was advertised as fluff is really a pretty good romantic suspense novel. Jess Mulcahey, sister of Summer from Code Name Nanny, is a hotel inspector, charged with finding out all aspects of poorly performing hotels. After bribing a desk clerk for a better room(one of her tests), she ends up in the room of Navy SEAL Hawk Mackenzie, who is on a secret assignment to find a stolen Koala named Princess(far fetched, but fun). A series of mistake and mishaps throw the two together over and over again, with alot of action and danger thrown in for good measure.
This is a very quick read and I really enjoyed it.

(More customer reviews)This is my first review and probably my last. My reason is to take exception to the comments of the reviewer from Dayton, Ohio. Not that Roy needs me to defend him, but in fairness a response is warranted.
First Seal is an insight into one of America's greatest warriors. SEAL's are regarded as probably the finest unconventional warriors in the world and First Seal brings you the man responsible for them. This is an excellent book, especially for those seeking insight into their foundation. Yes, there are personal attacks, yes there is profanity, and it is not for the light of heart. But honesty is something not viewed through rose colored glasses either.
The Navy is an institution, and as such viewed the SEAL's as a "necessary evil". That Roy succeeded and accomplished as much as he did is a tribute to his tenacity and his perserverance.
But in addition to the story of the SEAL's, is Roy's story and that is what First Seal is about. Roy has done more and seen more than any of us could imagine.
Don't dwell on the perceived inaccuracies, but read the book as it was intended. Roy's exploits are legendary and his men always knew where he was when things got tough, at the front of it all !!
And as for the comment that there is no "I" or "Me" in "Team", remember.... There is no "We" in "Leadership"

(More customer reviews)I read this book shortly after publication in the 1980's. This is one of the best accounts of navy seal ops in viet nam. next to 'the five fingers", it is probably one of the best novels about the war period:I was there. This one is full of action.

(More customer reviews)I've read all of the Rogue Warrior books, plus the Marcinko book on leadership. I was hoping this book would be about non-fictional accounts of the missions in which these SpecOps warriors participated. However, there is very little here on missions except for oblique references, probably to classified missions. Mostly it covers why each got into the SEALS, and how they enjoyed working under Marcinco due to his management abilities and his confidence in his troops. This is a good backgrounder if you're a manager and want to know how to lead the troops, and it fits in with the Rogue Warrior's other management books. But you'll be disappointed if you were looking for shootin' and lootin', in which case you should stick to the Rogue's fiction books.

Hot Pursuit Review

(More customer reviews)I have loved Christina Skye's contemporary thrillers/romances, but this one is a bit of a let down. I won't go into a description of the plot as that has been done very well by other reviewers. But I would like to say something about the character development. While she has established the characters, their backgrounds and the plot, the female character's personality is stagnant throughout the story. The woman becomes extremely annoying because her reaction to every situation is the same, basically she feels that she knows best and she will do what she wants to do. This results in her bodyguards themselves being exposed to unnecessary risk, but after an initial burst of repentence, she does it again and again. The character is supposed to be kind and compassionate and loyal to her friends, but her actual behaviour paints her as selfish, stubborn and careless of other people's lives, not to mention just a little bit stupid. It just doesn't make sense. Wouldn't a supposedly bright person learn from repetitive mistakes (especially those involving gunfire!) and grow up a little? Frankly, I cannot see what the male lead is supposed to see in her.
