This is a book that is guarranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat every second that you hold it in your hands. You WILL HAVE to continue to read this book unitl the very end, because it sucks you into the role, you become, think, and mentally act like Richard Marcinko, a thirty year veteren in the U.S. Navy's elite maritime commandos, and the creator of the Navy's legendary countererrorist unit SEAL TEAM 6. I personally took off a days work in order to read this book from cover to cover and I was not dissappionted at all. After reading this book I went through withdrawal pains waiting for his next book. I vow that if you even read one page of this non stop thriller, you to will become addicted to the unique writng styles of Richard Marcinko and John Weisman. For all of you modern day and wannabe warriors out there, read this book for it is the bible of Special Warfare, it will give you some of the unique mental and physical demands and outlooks of the worlds most deadly fighting force the Navy SEALS!!!! Trust me, just buy the book and enjoy the thing!! Violence of Action Review

(More customer reviews)It's aptly named; violence is all it's about. There is none of the finesse, characterizations or political subtleties that made the previous Rogue Warrior novels, co-authored by John Weisman, so entertaining and - yes - uplifting.
Marcinko is a bona fide warrior - a BTDT whose two non-fiction books, Leadership Secrets, and Strategies for Success, are permanent installations in my home library. His original book, Rogue Warrior, the autobiography, is another keeper - one of the most inspirational and motivating I've ever read.
Unfortunately, Violence of Action makes a mockery of all that went before. It's cartoonish in its simplicity, gratuitously violent without any redeeming qualities, and mouthily preachy without being the least bit inspiring. When one of Demo Dick's teammates died, in prior books, you really cared... about them, their families, the SEAL community. Not so in Violence of Action; I kept wishing someone would shoot either the characters or me and put me out of my misery.
I am crazy about Commander Richard Marcinko. I have the utmost respect for all that he's accomplished, all that he's survived, and the kind of life he's lived. Yes, he's rough around the edges and I probably wouldn't want to bring him home to meet my mother, but he also has the courage of his convictions, which is rare today.
Please don't judge his abilities by this book; it is NOT a good representation (although a lot of his detractors would say it is) of the Rogue Warrior character. There is none of the self-deprecating humor found in the earlier works.
It begs the question whether Mr. Weisman was the driving force behind the other bestsellers.

SEAL FORCE ALPHA Review

(More customer reviews)I've read a lot of Marcinko's books and I have to admit they're starting to bore me. It's the same formula every time; Dick discovers a dirty politician or evil tycoon, has a verbal confrontation with him, goes away, comes back, kills the bad guy's ex-special ops bodyguards, and finally kills the bad guy. Somewhere in there he stops to talk about the size of his unit (and I don't mean the number of guys on his team). What makes Seal Force Alpha a little different from the norm is the amount of effort Marcinko has spent on setting up the enemy this time. The "ex-special ops bodyguards" that he usually chews through without much trouble are actually fearsome in this book! They're the Chinese equivalent of SEALs and Marcinko & Weissman really make them seem like they could give Marcinko trouble. The way Marcinko describes his fight in the river and his encounters with the Chinese commander are quite interesting and he manages to throw in some real surprises. The inclusion of obscure tradecraft details also makes these sequences quite thrilling. It's a good thing they're here, too--the rest of the book ranges from mildly intriguing to downright sloppy (the ending is very rushed). An average Marcinko book with slightly above average action scenes.

(More customer reviews)I read this book shortly after publication in the 1980's. This is one of the best accounts of navy seal ops in viet nam. next to 'the five fingers", it is probably one of the best novels about the war period:I was there. This one is full of action.

Most of the reviews are from the Marcinko Autobiography, and for some reason thay have been added to other books by the author. As you read these, don't blame the reviewers if you are reading about the wrong book. On to my own review...
For sheer adventure and excitement, this is hard to beat. The autobiographical account of one of the original creators of the deadly Seal Team covert operations squads. Richard was a former frogman and UDT member. He was also a wild, drinking, swearing, fighting guy whose outrageous courage and antics led him from a man with little education, to a top official in the US Navy Seals. On the way he broke the rules, rankled officers, and pushed for the best treatment and gear he could get for his men. By necessity these man lived hard and fought hard.
In the end of his career he claims the navy went after him on a personal agenda to drive him out on drummed up criminal charges, jealous officers and so forth. It may be true, and it may also be that the exact skills and temperament that made him so effective against the enemy were a detriment when dealing with the whitewashed pencil pushers at the pentagon. It is tough to be a stone cold killer in peacetime and just turn that aggression on and off.
To hear another persons opinion on what happened to Marcinko, read "Brave Men Dark Waters" also sold at Amazon.com. It's author, Orr Kelly, says he was in the Seals with Marcinko and as part of his own book tells his version of Marcinko as an out of control egotist, a real rogue warrior. Read these and other books, and you be the judge. Regardless, I could not put this book from Marcinko down, very exciting.
