Do Patrick Robinson a favor and get this book from your library, or if you must own it, wait for the paperback. If his royalties fall off, perhaps he will submit to better editing.
Robinson's characters are more properly caricatures. None of that bothered me much in his earlier works, although I always thought his national villains (especially the Chinese, who figure as modern-day Fu Manchus in this offering - more so than before) were rather one dimensional. I don't annoy easily, but this one did annoy me for a couple of reasons.
First, early in the story (p. 11) and just before slamming the incumbent president (whose "shocking self-interest and lack of judgment" were the subject of an earlier work) he refers to the "vastly experienced Senator Ted Kennedy, whose unwavering patriotism and endless concern for his country make him always a natural leader among men." Now Senator Kennedy probably is all of those things, although I've never thought of him as a Defense wonk, but the line had nothing to do with the story - particularly with the use of the verb "make" as opposed to "made" - when everyone else in the scenario was referred to in the past tense.
All I can figure is that Robinson met the senator at a cocktail party on Cape Cod (one of the author's homes according to his bio) and promised to mention him in his next book.
Second, the great court-martial scene was just plain impossible. Robinson's acknowledgments state that he relied upon legal sources in the US Navy who didn't wish to be named. I can understand why they didn't wish identification, since the description of the trial is something out of a bad 19th century novel, and the procedures from beginnig to end violate just about every article of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Note to Robinson: 1) just because someone presses charges, doesn't mean there will be a trial, that's up to the court-martial convening authority and he can say no, 2) you forgot to include the Military Judge in the trial - someone would have noticed, 3) the president of the court has dammed little authority, and he NEVER makes rulings on evidence or announces the verdict, much less editorializes (the judge handles that, and he doesn't editorialize either), 4) a court-martial never includes someone of lesser rank than the accused, so the lieutenant would't be there, and if he were, the trial would be busted on appeal, 5) ballots are secret, 6) it takes a 2/3rds vote to convict; you only had three out of five votes and needed four, 7) the court doesn't recommend a sentence, it determines one, and both the verdict and the sentence are reviewed by the convening authority and at least one appellate court in a case involving the dismissal of an officer. And 8 (just to be really nit-picky) there is only one "Judge Advocate General" in the entire Navy; he's a 2-star admiral. Every other member of the uniformed Naval legal establishment is called a "judge advocate."
Yes, we all know about literary license, but this was clueless, not to mentioned contrived.
The action scenes were good, but read it at your own risk if you're looking for plausibility. and yes, I'm donating my copy (hardcover, I regret to say) to my local library.
A JAG 0-6

S.E.A.L. Team Omega: Flames of Betrayal Review

I honestly enjoyed the story. Sierra Rose took this story and made it work.
I didn't even know that I would like an action novel but this book sure proved that I did.
Sierra took us on a ride with Cassidy and Ethan that is sure to be remembered long after it is read. Cassidy and her fiery personality made you like her a lot. You laughed at the idea of such a little woman giving such big orders. You honor her for her courage. You feel compassion for her during the abuse and pain. You blush when she realizes true love.
Ethan is just the right one to show her. He is gentle but real.
While reading this book I could literally see it playing on the big screen.
There was a little editing that needed to be done, but not enough to take away from the story line. The story rocked!

Dourado Review

Dourado
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Monsieur le Chevalier Louis Domenic de Rienzi is the unluckiest man I know - or at least know of. He has made a discovery that will literally shock the world. It's 1829 and de Rienzi is sailing back to France with a hold full of precious artifacts, including one in particular that will reshape our knowledge of history and of the Bible.
I'm no historian, but I know enough about the power of the early church in Rome to know that anything threatening their stranglehold on religious power would have been met with swift (and often violent) action. In this case, it appears that no action was necessary as nature took a hand in the game and gutted the Dourado, ripping it's hold open with submerged rocks and sending her to the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
And there de Rienzi's treasure lay; undisturbed; until...
Dourado is the first in a series of Dane Maddock adventures. I am a fan of Clive Cussler's 'Dirk Pitt' novels and David Wood's debut is a worthy addition to my list of favorite swashbuckling heroes. There's the hero, Maddock, his irreverent partner Uriah 'Bones' Bonebrake, and the beautiful daughter of a fallen comrade. Oh, and of course, the treasure.
The plot may be somewhat familiar: ex-Navy seals running an underwater salvage team run up against some hard luck on their current project and along comes a beautiful stranger with a tale of fantastic treasure to take the edge off their disappointment. The excitement of this new mission soon wears off though, as more than one mysterious group of very dangerous adversaries begins to take an unhealthy interest in Maddock's business.
Wood's characters in Dourado are fully developed and fit into a believable and entertaining plot very nicely. Maddock has his own secrets that often haunt him at night but the flawed hero is not one to shirk from challenge - or duty. The global locales portrayed in Dourado are three dimensional and inviting, and add an authentic and adventurous spice to the tale.
As the plot builds, the main characters - and a few others - are swept up into an international conspiracy, the pages of Dourado turn as swiftly as the water filled her cargo hold nearly two hundred years ago. The final scenes take place in Petra and could only have been written by someone who has been there - or at least has done a tremendous amount of research.
I can't discuss the final scenes without giving away too much of the story. Suffice it to say that Mr. Wood has crafted an amazing story that combines adventure, faith, history and excitement in equally fascinating measure. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series - Cibola - already available at Amazon.
Dourado is published by Gryphonwood Press.

The Malacca Conspiracy Review

The Malacca Conspiracy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's the Fourth of July, and rather fitting that I've just turned the final page of Don Brown's new geopolitical thriller, The Malacca Conspiracy, as the book has a decidedly patriotic feel. With our nation's capital, Washington, DC, as one-quarter of the exotic, landscape quartet along with the far-flung destinations of Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, Mr. Brown has the reader traveling the globe without ever having to leave the comfort of her bedroom slippers.
And true to form, the rockets glare and the fireworks explode off each page of this novel leaving me satiated, but still wanting more. From reading all five of Mr. Brown's novels, I have discovered that he is the master of the plot, moving the story along seamlessly with grace and detail, and the skill of the masters of his time. He had me chomping at the bit to know what was going to happen next.
The book has something for everyone. With a flair for the dramatic and penchant for sniffing out percolating controversy, Don Brown keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. Gentleman readers will love the high-stakes action and the geopolitical implications. Although the author has a knack for seeing the future having predicted the 2008 shooting war between Russia and Georgia in his novel, Black Sea Affair, I hope his crystal ball is on the fritz this time around, and our country is safe from the any of his fictional fireworks.
As for the ladies, don't be fooled by political and military undertones. The author has brought back two popular characters from his first three books in The Navy Justice Series, Zack Brewer and Diane Colcernian, and the sexual tension between the two sizzles like the burgers and dogs on your grill. Happy 4th and enjoy this and all four other Don Brown novels.

Warning Order Review

Author Jamie Fredric delivers an outstanding and thrilling adventure novel.
This author has a unique ability to weave such suspense through the chapters that it becomes an obsession. You will want to know what happens next. The author also cleverly weaves the book title into the story line in such a way it reminded me of Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye and the way that book title was woven into the story. It is refreshing to find solid writing talent.
This is a famous author waiting to happen.
The book is very well done. Buy it, read it, share it. The readers who follow this author early will have been there when...
This novel is a solid five star read.

Merchants Of Terror Review

Merchants Of Terror
Average Reviews:

This story opens with Jack Dyson foiling an airline hijacking over Russia after which you are parachuted to the Ukraine. You land in the midst of a huge arms theft destined for detonation somewhere off the eastern shores of the U.S. This is great techno-thriller and I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone. Jack Dyson is a likable hero whose actions speak louder than words. The novel has a complex and intelligent plot with just enough technical detail to satisfy the technocrats, but not detract from the story. There's a depth to this story that could give many mainstream conspiracy novels a run for their money. Well researched and it reminded me of Tom Clancy, but it's faster paced and I liked the sprinkling of humor used to release some of the tension. I can't wait for the second installment of this trilogy.

Defiance (Navy Justice, Book 3) Review

Defiance (Navy Justice, Book 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don Brown is quickly moving up in the ranks of the great novelists. 'Defiance' is a story that is hard to put down. This is the third installment in 'The Navy Justice Series'. Although the others have been very good, this is the best of the lot so far.
Zack Brewer and Diane Colcernian are back as central characters in this novel of courtroom drama, suspense, action, and even romance. Besides the assorted terrorist villains, there is a U.S. senator and presidential candidate, Eleanor Claxton, who is Machavellian to the core. Her machinations add an element of the worst in American politics. It also includes a dramatic rescue attempt by U.S. Navy Seals that has the potential of igniting a major war. In addition to all of the action, there is a spiritual component present for several of the characters facing major crises.
This book will appeal those of varying interests. I recommend it highly.

Kilo Class Review

Kilo Class
Average Reviews:

In Kilo Class, Patrick Robinson did some good writing. I enjoyed reading the book during the escapades of Hurricane Floyd and it kept my on the edge on my seat. He did have some technical flaws in the book suck as a Super Cobra being used as a transport helicopter. Also, I'm not one to believe that a Tiawanese naval vessal would kill more than half the people onboard a research base just for showing up at an island. It makes for a good plotline, but it's not quite believeable. Also, the ending could have been MUCH better than leaving off where it did. He ended the story way to quickly and I, plainly put, was not satisfied with the way the book ended compared to how Robinson built up the book. It was, however, a nice book to read and I enjoy his style of writing in this book. I plan to read Nimitz Class soon and hope that it can get up there with this book and have a hopefully better ending. But one last thing. I greatly enjoyed the antics of NSA Admiral Morgan. He was a riot and a good comic relief in the book in my opinion. Poor ol' Charlie...

Green Team: Rogue Warrior Review

Green Team: Rogue Warrior
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The weirdest thing about this book is that the beginning is so true-to-life. The book was written several years ago, but the story is very much in sync with what is going on in the world today. This is my fifth Marcinko book and it's one of his best. It's his second fiction work, a follow up to Rouge Warrior: Red Cell, which is the main reason I didn't give it five stars. The action scenes in Green Team are much more exciting than Red Cell, but the plot just doesn't stand up to the latter. It develops at a break neck speed, but its quality fluctuates right up to the end. First time Marcinko readers will probably get hooked, just like I did with Rogue Warrior: Task Force Blue, only to be more pleased with the discovery of his first and second books. Marcinko's crossing of the thin line between reality and fiction might annoy some readers who are not used to his style, but I think it's a very original welcomed breather from the "2+2=4" formulas of other action books. Marcinko is not the writer Tom Clancy is, but then again, Tom Clancy is not the warrior Marcinko is.

Last Man Standing Review

Web London heads up the FBI's super-elite Hostage Rescue Team, he is a master at what he does, but on their latest assignment he is not able to predict, or save them from the bloodshed that is about to erupt. Having his men assemble in an alley, Web feels confident that they will bring down the drug dealer they have set out to destroy, but within seconds they are ambushed...everyone killed, leaving Web the LAST MAN STANDING.
Trying to cope with the blame that has been placed on him by grieving widows, Web must try to put the pieces of that fateful night together. What went wrong? How were they ambushed? And who was the young boy Web saved in that alley, and why was he there?
As these questions plague Web he seeks the help of psychiatrist Claire Daniels, and with her help he will be able to confront his own tainted past, as well as answer the question WHY WAS HE CHOSEN TO BE THE ONLY SURVIVOR?
As Web's search begins the young boy disappears, and anyone connected to that fateful night will be violently silenced, but Web is confident he knows where the killer will strike next, only this time he may not survive the attack.
`Last Man Standing' marks the return to thriller writing for David Baldacci, unfortunately the novel is peopled with too many characters, and the plot is far more complicated than it should be. Characters come dropping in every chapter, and the in depth descriptions of weapons, and technical FBI jargon become a distraction rather than an important part to the plot.
As with all Baldacci novels his writing is clean, crisp and easy to read, and he CAN spin a good tale, only this time he has too much going on. As the old saying goes "LESS IS MORE".

Treason (Navy Justice, Book 1) Review

Treason (Navy Justice, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don Brown's novel Treason is the opening installment in his Navy Justice series, which follows Lieutenant Zack Brewer, a young JAG (Judge Advocate General) officer in the United States Navy. Some may regard this as a literary rip-off of the television series JAG. But Brown himself is a former JAG officer, and his book reflects a great understanding of the United States Military Justice system.

Treason opens with a meeting in Zurich between two wealthy Muslim men who discuss the creation of a new terrorism cell called the Council of Ishmael, which will infiltrate the United States military, creating cells within. Fast-forward seven years: a lawsuit against the military results in the Navy being forced to admit Muslim cleric into the Navy Chaplain Corps.
A petty officer in San Diego releases grenades at a church Bible study, killing eight people and injuring several others. A marine staff sergeant assassinates the Israeli ambassador to the United States during his visit to a USMC base in California. And in North Carolina, a fighter plane explodes over a lake, and some of the residue found in the wreckage indicates the use of plastic explosives.

While investigating the explosion, NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) agent Harry Kilnap discovers that the three incidents are all connected, and Islamic chaplains within the Navy incited all three. Lieutenant Brewer, coming off a huge win in a high profile rape case, is assigned to prosecute the three chaplains and to seek the death penalty for all three. The media begins to bill this case as the "court martial of the century." When Wellington Levinson, a well-known civilian trial lawyer, is hired to defend the chaplains, Brewer enlists the assistance of his longtime JAG rival, Lieutenant Diane Colcernian.
Don Brown is a born-again Christian, and this book does have some instances of characters wrestling with faith issues. But this novel is largely about the case of the Muslim chaplains and their connection to the Council of Ishmael, making this a story that both Christians and non-Christians can enjoy. Treason is a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I would love to see this book adapted for the screen as a movie. Brown offers a lot of detail without becoming overly technical. This is a very fast-moving story with short chapters which are easy for the reader to digest.

I am now reading and enjoying Hostage, the second book in Don Brown's Navy Justice series. If you love legal thrillers, I suggest you give the Navy Justice series a read, beginning with Treason. I look forward to more great novels in the future from Don Brown.
