I didn't even know that I would like an action novel but this book sure proved that I did.
Sierra took us on a ride with Cassidy and Ethan that is sure to be remembered long after it is read. Cassidy and her fiery personality made you like her a lot. You laughed at the idea of such a little woman giving such big orders. You honor her for her courage. You feel compassion for her during the abuse and pain. You blush when she realizes true love.
Ethan is just the right one to show her. He is gentle but real.
While reading this book I could literally see it playing on the big screen.
There was a little editing that needed to be done, but not enough to take away from the story line. The story rocked!

Area 51: Excalibur Review

(More customer reviews)More plot twists, and surprising new facts. In the tradition of the Area 51 series you are left at the end of this book feeling confused, excited and concerned. At least there will not be another 12 month waiting period until the next chapter in this saga. 'The Truth' will be reveled this summer.
I have been reading this series of books since it began in 1997 and have yet to be disappointed. The books are all quick, easy reads and yet the story gets increasingly complex. To me this is the greatest strenght of this book and the entire series. If you are new to the Area 51 series do yourself a favor and start from the beginning otherwise you will be lost.

Dourado Review

(More customer reviews)Monsieur le Chevalier Louis Domenic de Rienzi is the unluckiest man I know - or at least know of. He has made a discovery that will literally shock the world. It's 1829 and de Rienzi is sailing back to France with a hold full of precious artifacts, including one in particular that will reshape our knowledge of history and of the Bible.
I'm no historian, but I know enough about the power of the early church in Rome to know that anything threatening their stranglehold on religious power would have been met with swift (and often violent) action. In this case, it appears that no action was necessary as nature took a hand in the game and gutted the Dourado, ripping it's hold open with submerged rocks and sending her to the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
And there de Rienzi's treasure lay; undisturbed; until...
Dourado is the first in a series of Dane Maddock adventures. I am a fan of Clive Cussler's 'Dirk Pitt' novels and David Wood's debut is a worthy addition to my list of favorite swashbuckling heroes. There's the hero, Maddock, his irreverent partner Uriah 'Bones' Bonebrake, and the beautiful daughter of a fallen comrade. Oh, and of course, the treasure.
The plot may be somewhat familiar: ex-Navy seals running an underwater salvage team run up against some hard luck on their current project and along comes a beautiful stranger with a tale of fantastic treasure to take the edge off their disappointment. The excitement of this new mission soon wears off though, as more than one mysterious group of very dangerous adversaries begins to take an unhealthy interest in Maddock's business.
Wood's characters in Dourado are fully developed and fit into a believable and entertaining plot very nicely. Maddock has his own secrets that often haunt him at night but the flawed hero is not one to shirk from challenge - or duty. The global locales portrayed in Dourado are three dimensional and inviting, and add an authentic and adventurous spice to the tale.
As the plot builds, the main characters - and a few others - are swept up into an international conspiracy, the pages of Dourado turn as swiftly as the water filled her cargo hold nearly two hundred years ago. The final scenes take place in Petra and could only have been written by someone who has been there - or at least has done a tremendous amount of research.
I can't discuss the final scenes without giving away too much of the story. Suffice it to say that Mr. Wood has crafted an amazing story that combines adventure, faith, history and excitement in equally fascinating measure. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series - Cibola - already available at Amazon.

Seals #1 Review

(More customer reviews)"SEALS," by Jack Terral, is a novel about the exploits of a platoon of U.S. Navy SEALs. Known as "Brannigan's Brigands," the platoon is led by Lieutenant William "Wild Bill" Brannigan. The novel has a post-9/11 setting, and the Brigands' mission takes them to wartime Afghanistan, where they face conflict with a local warlord. The backdrop for the story includes opium poppy cultivation, the effort to bring democracy to Afghanistan, and the aftermath of the Soviet occupation; the hunt for Osama bin Laden gets mentioned.
"SEALS" is a fast-moving, entertaining adventure story that is full of violent action. There is plenty of killing. However, the book is hurt by painfully cliched characters and dialogue. For example, a SEAL named Bruno Puglisi is described as coming "from a mob family," and his dialogue further reinforces the unimaginative stereotype. The overall structure of the book is awkward; informational passages are clumsily incorporated into the story. There is also a ridiculous romantic subplot that seems absurdly out of place and includes such unforgivable lines as "'He's so handsome! So Brad Pitt!'" At times it almost feels like Terral is purposely trying to write an over-the-top parody of military fiction.
Readers may be offended by the author's frequent use of the slur "raghead" to describe Afghan characters. It's one thing for a character to use it, but the third person narrative voice also uses the slur a number of times. The overall portrayal of the Afghan people is very negative--in this story they basically are either corrupt, greedy exploiters, foolish religious fanatics, or pathetic, passive victims of abuse. Still, Terral's Afghan villains and their henchmen are much more interesting and entertaining than his ridiculous cardboard SEALs. Although Terral's "SEALS" can be fun at times, the book left a foul aftertaste. The book's back cover promises that it is just the first in an "explosive new military action series."

Deep Fathom Review

(More customer reviews)When I picked up James Rollins' Deep Fathom, I was a bit nervous. I loved Excavation and I liked Subterranean, but I thought that they were almost the exact same plot. I was nervous that Deep Fathom would be another Excavation and Subterranean. Was I wrong! This book grabbed me from page one and would not let me go. I really liked how this book really did not focus on the supernatural, or non-human enemy, but rather had an enemy that was human, and with revenge as a driving force, it was very believable.
I also liked how this story had two different locations, under the ocean, and then in the risen ruins of an ancient city. I think this added to the overall enjoyment of the book. Rather than just be stuck in the came cave, we jumped from undersea to ruins, back to undersea, to a naval battle...and so on. It kept things moving at a great pace.
I would say that this book is James Rollins' best work to date, and I cannot wait to read his next novel!

This is probably the best novel ever written about Viet Nam seal operations. I rate it up there with "The Element of Surprise" with "Element" being possible the best non-fiction book. Couch's other fiction books are , unfortunatly not as good.

Treason (Navy Justice, Book 1) Review

(More customer reviews)Don Brown's novel Treason is the opening installment in his Navy Justice series, which follows Lieutenant Zack Brewer, a young JAG (Judge Advocate General) officer in the United States Navy. Some may regard this as a literary rip-off of the television series JAG. But Brown himself is a former JAG officer, and his book reflects a great understanding of the United States Military Justice system.

Treason opens with a meeting in Zurich between two wealthy Muslim men who discuss the creation of a new terrorism cell called the Council of Ishmael, which will infiltrate the United States military, creating cells within. Fast-forward seven years: a lawsuit against the military results in the Navy being forced to admit Muslim cleric into the Navy Chaplain Corps.
A petty officer in San Diego releases grenades at a church Bible study, killing eight people and injuring several others. A marine staff sergeant assassinates the Israeli ambassador to the United States during his visit to a USMC base in California. And in North Carolina, a fighter plane explodes over a lake, and some of the residue found in the wreckage indicates the use of plastic explosives.

While investigating the explosion, NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) agent Harry Kilnap discovers that the three incidents are all connected, and Islamic chaplains within the Navy incited all three. Lieutenant Brewer, coming off a huge win in a high profile rape case, is assigned to prosecute the three chaplains and to seek the death penalty for all three. The media begins to bill this case as the "court martial of the century." When Wellington Levinson, a well-known civilian trial lawyer, is hired to defend the chaplains, Brewer enlists the assistance of his longtime JAG rival, Lieutenant Diane Colcernian.
Don Brown is a born-again Christian, and this book does have some instances of characters wrestling with faith issues. But this novel is largely about the case of the Muslim chaplains and their connection to the Council of Ishmael, making this a story that both Christians and non-Christians can enjoy. Treason is a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I would love to see this book adapted for the screen as a movie. Brown offers a lot of detail without becoming overly technical. This is a very fast-moving story with short chapters which are easy for the reader to digest.

I am now reading and enjoying Hostage, the second book in Don Brown's Navy Justice series. If you love legal thrillers, I suggest you give the Navy Justice series a read, beginning with Treason. I look forward to more great novels in the future from Don Brown.
