(More customer reviews)I, being 16 years old and fasinated by military genre books andsuch, find this book amazing. I've already read Purple Heart, BronzeStar, and Navy Cross. After reading Medal of Honor, the book series was getting better and better. This series is excellent and H. Jay Riker is an excellent writer. I wish I could meet the man behind these great novels. I'm now reading Silver Star (wasn't at the bookstore till recently) and I truely love it. I like the books about the SEALs over the UDT books, but without the UDT, there would be no SEALs. I only hope H. Jay Riker continues to write about SEALs and makes books like these.

Seal Team Seven 12: Tropical Terror Review

(More customer reviews)I've been reading Keith Douglass's books since his first SEAL Team Seven novel and in my opinion, they have progressively strayed from a spec ops force to a more spray-n-pray team. He tends to have his team dropped in with some of the most obscure gear (i.e. the Bullpup) and takes away from the clandestine, silent professionals that SEALs are. I would suggest he go back to the originals and start from there. Keep it more realistic in ops planning and equipment, and slow the pace down and increase the intensity of the operations they perform. Take some time to show the teams different abilities and their talents as Naval Special Warfare personnel. These guys are more like Rambo laying down a field of lead instead of the precision SEALs are known for. Give them the gear the typically use - body armor, MP-5s, M-4s, balaclavas, etc. Drop the futuristic weaponry like the EAR or the Bullpup. It takes away from the fun and authenticity.

(More customer reviews)First of, I would like to say that the Seals, The Warrior Breed series is excellent! Gripping, captivating, truly believable combat scenes, and characters. This series is every bit as good, if not better than all of W.E.B. Griffin's series on the Army and Marine Corp.
However, I noticed one error in Purple Heart. In Chapter One, Joe Galloway's Character is identified as a Navy Captain, and in the Epilogue, he is referred to as an Admiral. Both Chapter One and the Epilogue occur on the same day in November 1961. I find it to be a slight oversight on the Editor's part; however, it is mildly annoying.
I contacted the author, and the publisher and as yet have not received a response from them.

Point Man Review

(More customer reviews)I read this book in its hardcover edition, when it first came out in 1993. At that time I was a "Rogue Warrior" buff and thats how I first heard of the legendary Jim Watson. I first learned of his book from Watson himself when briefly talking to him on the phone at the UDT/SEAL museum at Fort Pierce, FL in late 92 or early 93. I eagerly awaited this book to come out, then special ordered it from the local book store (this was before the Internet).
I found "Point Man" an interesting book, full of action but I could see how it would only be interesting if you are a SEAL fan. To someone who is not into the SEALs or SOF, it would probably be really boring. I found Watson's descriptions of the "original east coast SEALs" in the early to mid sixties interesting. What an interesting subculture of the Navy.
I knew that the east coast SEALs trained regularly in Tidewater, Virginia's Great Dismal Swamp. But until I read Watson's book I had no idea the SEALs of his era trained in the swamps of the Black River in Southeastern, NC. While the Uwharrie mountains of central NC were the training grounds for the sixties era Green Berets, the Great Dismal Swamp and Black River era of North Carolina were the riverine training grounds for the east coast Vietnam era SEALs
Full of little stories about the original east coast SEALs, it truly illustrates the laid back confidence, devil may care, "Marlboro man" mentality of the Vietnam era SEALs. Watson was in SOF long before it was popular, in fact he was in it when SOF was actually unpopular.
Watson describes many of the unique SEAL schools he attended. Among the self described hardest was the USMC's SERE or "escape and evasion" school. Watson, along with other original sixties era SEALs, were placed in a simulated Asian communist POW camp at the Marine Corp's mountain warfare school in the Sierra Nevada mountains of CA. There, he underwent some seriously evil training that probably could have been described as flat out sadistic. Back in those days, the Marines were the toughest hombres in the US military and corporal punishment was still legal in the Marines. Physical and psychological abuse in the USMC was rampant in those days and from his comments, Watson obviously didnt care for it.
The only thing that I didnt like was how Watson obviously is actually proud of his alcoholism. He has this in common with Richard Marcinko. The book is peppered with little stories and comments about booze. Alcoholism doesnt impress me. I would have left out most of the stories about booze.
I actually met Jim Watson a year after reading his book. While visiting the UDT/SEAL museum in Fort Pierce, FL in 1994 he was there as curator. I got to shake his hand and got his autograph. He tried to sell me a copy of his book, but I told him I had already read his book.
All in all a great story of the original east coast Navy SEALs, from the plankowner days of the early sixties to the end of Vietnam in the early seventies.

(More customer reviews)I was eagerly anticipating the forth of Patrick Robinson's submarine themed novels and was not disappointed. In fact the book was devoured in 48 hours with a some late nights and definitely falls into "can't put down" status.
The U.S. navy dispatches their most advanced submarine, captained by the best submariner, to spy in Chinese waters on their newly launched submarine. Everything goes to plan until the Submarine is captured and towed to a Chinese navy port whilst her crew are imprisoned and tortured. The U.S. national Security Adviser, Arnold Morgan, a fantastically larger than life character that appears in the previous novels, "Nimitz Class", "Kilo Class" and "HMS Unseen", is the pivot between the Political intrigue and the naval options. These options include the rescue of the imprisoned crew by the U.S. seals and the problem of the most advanced submarine in the enemies hand.
Sensitive to providing sufficient detail to ensure authenticity Robinson does not overload the reader with too much technical jargon in the way that Clancy can. A superbly written and crafted "can't put down" novel that I would strongly recommend.

(More customer reviews)I've read quite a few spec ops books; fiction, historical, good, bad...and this book falls in the "eh" catageroy. It was mildly entertaining, the characters were mildly believable, and the story was predictable at best. Thankfully, the monotany of the pedestrian plot was boken up by action sequences and jungle tracking/stalking scenes. But even those were defeated by the fact that you *knew* that they would always make it out safe or find their man. if you have nothing better to do pick up this book. You might like it you might not. enjoy.

The book is an excellent continuance in the series of characters which I have grown attached to. In the book, there could have been a little more action. The book spent more time on getting to know the SEALs and how it was like back in America during the Vietnam War. (I'm one of those who like to read about the guerrilla fighting) I think H. Jay Riker is writing an excellent series and this book continues to pull me deeper into it. Excellent work, Mister Riker. I can't wait to read "In Harm's Way" and other books following it in this excellent and ongoing series.

The Sixth Fleet: Seawolf Review

(More customer reviews)I enjoyed this book very much. The primary reason is that the author's knowledge and experience in the Navy are reflected in his style of writing. He provides insight into the day-to-day, almost minute by minute tempo of military operations. He does not overwhelm the reader with technical jargon, but explains what is happening in a manner that draws the reader into believing that he or she is in the same environment as the characers in the book.
As a naval aviation veteran, I was pleased to see the detail he puts into his stories - several times I was caught up in the story line and remembered details about being part of a multi-crew aircraft that I thought I had forgotten. For those of us who have served, that is a powerful stimulant.
I found that this book, as well as the first in the series, was very difficult to put down at night. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series, as well as earlier novels by Dave Meadows that I have missed.

Kilo Class Review

(More customer reviews)In Kilo Class, Patrick Robinson did some good writing. I enjoyed reading the book during the escapades of Hurricane Floyd and it kept my on the edge on my seat. He did have some technical flaws in the book suck as a Super Cobra being used as a transport helicopter. Also, I'm not one to believe that a Tiawanese naval vessal would kill more than half the people onboard a research base just for showing up at an island. It makes for a good plotline, but it's not quite believeable. Also, the ending could have been MUCH better than leaving off where it did. He ended the story way to quickly and I, plainly put, was not satisfied with the way the book ended compared to how Robinson built up the book. It was, however, a nice book to read and I enjoy his style of writing in this book. I plan to read Nimitz Class soon and hope that it can get up there with this book and have a hopefully better ending. But one last thing. I greatly enjoyed the antics of NSA Admiral Morgan. He was a riot and a good comic relief in the book in my opinion. Poor ol' Charlie...

Ghost Force Review

(More customer reviews)I personally lost count as to how many times the SEALs (in enemy territory) were quoted as 'yelling'. That personally amazed me. Then we have the same SEALs and SAS operators using 'flashlights' in enemy territory again. Then they placed explosive charges in 'Both' A4 Skyhawk engines, when they only have one. Then they placed their initiating daisy chain for all the explosives on the tarmac connected to each other on a four hour time delay. Wrong Wrong Wrong. You just do not do that. Next you have the SATCOM communication gear being 'direction finded' by the enemy radio operators. That doesnt happen. They use a narrow satellite beam and it is directed directly at the satellite. Another big wrong situatio was when one of the operators was wounded, and they are ripping shirts and other items to dress the wound. Nope! the SEAL corpsman would have broke open his London Bridge trauma bag and dealt with it.
There were just too many errors in the technical and tactical operations of this book, they simply distracted from the story (over and over again) I usually run through a book in a day or so, but this one, I had to put down over and over until I forced myself to get through it.
I am ranking this 3 stars based upon Patrick Robinsion's past novels. If it was a stand alone, it would rate 1- 1.5 stars, max.

Not only does the reader get a gritty look at what it was like to be a SEAL in the Vietnam era but also what kind of men did the job. You actually get a look at SEAL lives outside of the jungle giving you a chance to know the men. Action and Navy life all in one. A great read for those wanting to know how it was to be a SEAL then and a great read for SEALS of the future. Awesome book and a awesome series!!!

(More customer reviews)The SILENT SERVICE: Ohio Class, is a naval action story centering on an Iranian attempt to draw the United States into war. Iran's goal is to track the American nuclear submarine, USS Ohio, as it slips into their territorial waters and then to trick the American captain into firing the first shot.
It begins when a U.S. surveillance satellite detects a large construction project at the base of a mountain near a city called Bandar-e Charak, on the southwestern coast of Iran. The Americans think Iran is building some kind of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons manufacturing facility inside of the mountain. To find out for sure, Washington orders the USS Ohio and a navy SEAL team into the Persian Gulf to secretly check it out.
Unfortunately, the American's covert mission plays right into an elaborate trap set by Iranians. It seems they have recently purchased several Soviet made diesel submarines and have hidden them in tactical locations around the gulf where they patiently wait to spring a trap on the American submarine. They will either force the USS Ohio to surface or sink it outright. So, as the Ohio advances farther into dangerous waters the trap is sprung and the action begins. Before you know it, the water becomes crowded with more angry torpedoes swimming about than you can shake a stick at, but the bad guys learn the hard way that coming up against an Ohio Class nuclear submarine is no walk in the park.
This is the first book I've ready by H. Jay Riker. I found the story interesting--not as exciting as some, but definitely a good read. I could, however, do without the romantic side stories. To me, they're not necessary and only slow down the pace of the story. But there is plenty of action, and even a few high-tech gadgets to spice up the battle scenes. Over all, I give the book a good recommendation.

Seal Team Seven #15: Ambush Review

The only thing I didn't like is the death of one of my favorite characters. I will not reveal who that was so I do not ruin the book for those who have not read it yet. At least the new Master Chief is good addition. Navy Seals are a cold, calculated
group of men. These books do them justice.
