Gone Too Far (Troubleshooters, Book 6) Review

Gone Too Far (Troubleshooters, Book 6)

I absolutely LOVE this series; otherwise, I NEVER would have even considered buying a hardcover. I prefer smaller paperback books, but Ms. Brockmann can be credited for providing such an interesting world within a fictional US SEAL Team that I couldn't possibly wait for the paperback! I had to know how the outcome of the cliff-hanger from the last book. I had to know how Sam was going to win Alyssa back, after following their nail-biting, teeth-grinding exploits throughout the other books in this series. I had to know how the investigation would end and whether Sam's estranged wife and beloved daughter were really dead in that house!
I'm happy to say Ms. Brockmann delivers on all those unanswered questions... once again providing a thrilling mystery interwoven with great characters and plenty of love. Old friends are revisited and new twists keep the pace going full throttle. And again, the flashbacks to a WWII romance are an added bonus. Thank goodness, Ms. Brockmann hasn't "Gone Too Far", but has plenty more stories of wonderful characters to tell. I now look forward to Max and Gina's story! But in the meantime, I'll reread the series start to finish... it's just that good! Worthy of keeping. For those who aren't familiar with the Ms. Brockmann's US SEALs... this team's tales are great stand-alone stories, but are even better as a series. Their stories are found in the following books (in order):
1. Unsung Hero about Lt Tom Paoletti
2. Defiant Hero about Lt JG John Nilsson
3. Over the Edge about Sr Chief Stan Wolchonok
4. Out of Control about SEAL Ken Karmody
5. Into the Night about Lt JG Mike Muldoon
6. Gone Too Far about Lt Roger "Sam" Starett
She does have another series of 11 books on a different sexy SEAL team, some of which are being republished too. These are shorter books, without the interwoven flashbacks of the newer series. They are, so far:
1. Prince Joe about Lt Joe "Cat" Catalanotto
2. Forever Blue about Lt C. "Blue" McCoy
3. Frisco's Kid about Lt Alan "Frisco" Francisco
and Night Watch (formerly published as Wild Wild Wes) about Chief Wes Skelly, which is coming in September 2003.
(There are nearly a dozen books in this older series, so only the few above are easily obtainable. Hopefully the rest will be released again too???!!!)

Into the Night (Troubleshooters, Book 5)

I wish there was a 4.5 star choice.
I own all of the Troubleshooters and most of the Tall, Dark and Dangerous series and consider myself to be a die hard fan of either of Brockmann's SEAL novels. I impatiently looked forward to her new book INTO THE NIGHT, especially because I really loved Mike Muldoon as an ancillary character in her other Troubleshooters books.
As with all Troubleshooters books, there are several stories running concurrently which eventually intertwine. INTO THE NIGHT is no exception. The WWII story is lovely and well told, and I also really enjoyed getting to know Mary Lou Starett who I really didn't like prior to this book. Brockmann does a great job of creating a sympathetic character who you find yourself identifying with. Her humaness is what makes her so compelling. It also shows a new side of Sam Starett, who is my all time favorite SEAL character the author has written, and not all of that side is pleasant. Also fun is getting to see what our favorite past heroines are up to and how they deal with their husbands' scary jobs.
The primary love story, between Mike and Joan DeCosta is well written, but not as dynamic as her other stories. The build up of sexual tension is not up to Brockmann's usual par and when the two finally get together, it's almost anticlimactic, although the scene itself is unbelievably steamy.
I found myself rooting for the secondary characters more than the primary characters and have to admit to being a bit disappointed in not getting to see more interaction between Sam and Alyssa Locke, but I guess that the author is just whetting our appetites for her next outing GONE TOO FAR.
I would definitely recommend this book, however if I were recommending a Troubleshooters book to someone new to Suzanne Brockmann, I'd choose OUT OF CONTROL or THE UNSUNG HERO, which I think are even better than this novel.

The Saltwater Cowboys are at it again, as they are charged with the rescue of 120 passengers on-board a hi-jacked plane which is forced to land in Kazbekistan. Joining the SEAL team in the covert operation is FBI hostage negotiator Max, agents Jules Cassidy (who merely is window dressing again) and Alyssa Locke, who continues her tortured romance with Lt. Sam Starrett., and Reserve shopper pilot Teri Howe.
This time out, it is crusty Senior Chief Stan Wolchonok who gets the love interest, though he tries numerous times to blow it by setting her up with hunky Lt. Mike Muldoon. Teri Howe is the pursuer, while Stan tries to steer clear of the whole enlisted verses office fraternization rule (which does not apply to reservists). Each step Stan tries to take away from her, she takes two steps forward. It is nice to see the least romantic of the SEALs show his softer side.
This one is fraught with so much tension and a pretty harrowing assault of one of the passengers (as the negotiation team has to sit by and watch and listen in abject horror). Negotiator Max wrestles with his growing feelings for the hostage, who is nearly 20 years his junior, and his inability to save her in time.
One thing I can do without is the WWII junk. I just skip over that stuff. It does not add anything to the story line other than additional pages. I like when they use an alternate font so that skipping is even easier!
I usually do not like serial books, but this particular series manages to make each book stand on their own merits. You really get to like the characters, and they pop up all over the series, but it is not a forced inclusion like some of the other stories I have read. I look forward to each new installment.

Summer Mulcahey learned to trust no one but herself at a young age. Her "take no prisoners" attitude led her to a career in the FBI. Her current assignment was to protect Sophy and Audra O'Connor, the children of Cara O'Connor who is the youngest ever female Assistant DA in San Francisco. Cara is dealing with a high profile case involving Richard Costello, big time bad guy. While Costello is trying for an appeal, someone is sending threats (in several different ways) to Cara. Fearing for her daughters, Summer is put on the job. The problem is Summer's cover. She is to be the girls' nanny! Summer knows nothing about raising children, and less than nothing about ballet lessons and teenage troubles. The older daughter is dealing with normal fifteen-year-old crisis problems and the younger daughter has special talents no one knows of. Then there is Gabe, the guy who handles landscaping and general contracting. There is just something different about him. For a "gardner" he is just too efficient.
Gabe Morgan is actually Navy SEAL. Senator Tate Winslow is soon to marry Cara O'Connor. Tate knows something is wrong, but Cara insists it is nothing. Tate asks a personal favor of Gabe, who is recovering from knee trouble. Gabe is mainly to secure the O'Connor home and grounds, but to also keep an eye on the people that reside within. But the new nanny is unlike anyone Gabe has ever met and Audra is just full of pranks.
Costello's reach is long, even from a prison cell. Summer and Gabe must team up to keep the O'Connor family safe. Ishmael "Izzy" Teague is called in by Gabe for his hacking and computer skills. But even with all three of them on the job, the O'Connor family is in trouble.
(...)Gabe is not the only one recovering from an on-the-job wound. Summer has major physical scars that she just has not found the time to deal with. They cause some tense moments in the novel. As for the two little girls, they often stole the show, especially younger Sophy. I sincerely hope an adult version of Sophy will someday have her own story. There is lots of potential items to work with in that character. As always, Skye's talent clearly shows in the story. Every character has his or her own quirks. Romances are built up at a great pace, just as the action and suspense are. This author is not one to be missed!(...)

Navy Seal Dad (Harlequin Desire) Review

Two years had not erased the memory of Rachel Grant. Now injured and forced to take time off, Lieutenant Commander Pete "Mac" McKenna returns to the city of New Orleans where he once shared snow cones and passion with Rachel. He does not know they also shares another profound connection.
Rachel never thought Mac would return. Four weeks of love had radically changed her life, and when he left, Mac took part of her with him. But he also left her pregnant, and it was the pregnancy that made his loss bearable. Mac has already chosen life as a Navy SEAL over her once, and Rachel does not intend to a repetition of history. She also cannot deny him the opportunity to be a father.
Once again author Metsy Hingle pens an emotional, evocative tale in NAVY SEAL DAD. Her love for military heroes makes this tale sparkle with its wounded hero and his confrontation with choices of the heart. Rachel Grant is a likewise striking character with her respect for Mac's need to be a SEAL and willingness to face the challenges that presents for her and her son, even when Mac decides to walk away from the career he loves. Secondary characters sparkle, especially the irrepressible roommate with the fantastic matchmaking skills and a heart of gold A delightful, thought provoking read, NAVY SEAL DAD comes highly recommended.

Indivisible Review

Indivisible
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was really hoping to love this one; the book has a fantastic premise. What a pity the author made the whole thing hang from about eighty Big Misunderstandings and four hundred Massive Coincidences.
My God this book was more melodramatic than a telenovela!
I do like a fair-haired hero, so at least the book had that going for it.
Indivisible is hampered by some severe over-writing; the epilogue is about as long as any other author's entire book! (And yes, I'm aware of the irony of writing such a long review to complain about an over-written book!) Everything is explained and explained some more. And honestly, no reader wants pages of details about mortgages and the heroine's new rental property, nor does anybody care for the life story of the old lady in the front pew of the church! Stick to the story!
Even worse, the plot centres on the most unlikeable heroine I have ever come across in fiction. It is entirely `telling' instead of `showing', which made the prose devoid of emotion for me; I SAW everything happen, but didn't FEEL any of it.
But the book's biggest failing was Charlie, the heroine. Her husband is a Navy SEAL. Instead of - oh, I don't know - finding out what a SEAL is, she spends the first year of their marriage happily ignorant.
- She doesn't know the other wives of the team.
- She doesn't realise that he - one of the world's most highly-trained military operatives - actually goes to war zones.
- She has a huge tantrum when he is deployed, and complains that it's not her fault she didn't believe him when they first met and he told her he had a dangerous job.
- She has another tantrum when she discovers he - a covert operative - won't be able to call her every day.
- She has another tantrum when he calls her and can't talk for long, and instead of caring this might be the last time she EVER talks to him, she gets in a huff and hangs up in a bad mood.
- She blames HER HUSBAND for her rape.
- She cries nonstop for pretty much the entire book. `Oh poor ME. I'M so lonely. I'M so scared. MY husband chose his work over precious ME.' She does not seem to realise you can't just walk away from the Navy whenever you want, just because your wife is needy and wants you to stay home.
- She sends her husband naughty text messages and sexy pictures throughout the day, when he's in very serious mission-related meetings. This is Gideon's problem too - as if someone this important to the military would be having a sex-text session with his wife in the middle of discussing important military operations.
Charlie, HONEY, the point of being in the Special Forces is that you can NEVER tell anyone where you've been or what you've done. Grow up and get with the program, you selfish brat.
Here's part of Charlie's tantrum when her husband calls her from overseas:
"Whatever. Just go. I have a class to get to anyway."...
...Charlie felt a little bit of guilt for being so bitchy, but first he chose his job over her and left.
Uh, no Charlie. You married a SEAL. Deal with it.
Then we got to the birth scene which - I suspect - the author intended to be funny. I found it crude and disgusting. The general obsession with babies in the final third of the story completely detracted from the main plotline, and I found the weird switch of focus to pregnancy and childrearing to be a disappointment. It wasn't helped by the likes of:
"The lump in her throat was so huge she was sure one of the babies had crawled up there."
Ugh. Seriously?!
All of the author's female characters are bitchy and nagging, and it made me really ashamed for women. They're always snipping at their men and picking fights if they don't have their man's attention 100% of the time. I couldn't find anybody to like in this book.
Not that the men are any better. They're all stereotypes.
-The sleazy baddie who does evil things for absolutely no reason - while practically twirling his moustache to illustrate how BAD he is.
-The suspicious brother who's always lived in the hero's shadow. The brother is supposed to soon be graduating as a doctor, and yet every single time there's a medical issue - like the heroine FAINTING in front of him - he has no idea what to do.
-The perfect hero who treats his bitchy wife like a goddess and claims responsibility for all of her tantrums.
-The heroine's caring, perfect brother.
The gross incompetence of one of the SEALs on the team was utterly ridiculous. It's next to impossible to become a SEAL, and the guy's slapstick antics that kept getting them shot at were, quite frankly, insulting to the Special Forces.
The choppy switching between flashbacks and the present day was distracting. I LOVE stories told in two parts like that, but only if the author is skilled at making the transitions in time. It did not work here - we seriously even had flashbacks in the epilogue! It was too much too often.
The author has a tendency to use "off of" on a regular basis. It's a grammatically poor expression, and painful to read in published writing. The constant italicising of "He", "Him" and "His" to talk about the rapist was supposed to show some sort of detachment I suppose, but it was used with such frequency it nearly drove me insane.
I would love for this story to be rewritten with better pacing and less annoying characters, as it is a fantastic concept that was completely ruined. Perhaps with more experience the author will be able to do her great idea some justice.

Lucy Donovan is a scrappy fighter with the ability to infiltrate enemy lines and consistently get the job done in her capacity as a trained CIA operative. Lucy does not do helpless and she absolutely has no time for complicated emotions. Lt. James "Gus" Atwater is a Navy Seal working as part of an elite CIA support and he has no time for anyone that does not understand the meaning of teamwork. What these two don't know is that none of their training or covert operative experience is going to help them when they meet up again after many years apart and have to face all the demons that a past relationship has, especially one where there are unresolved issues.
Gus and Lucy knew each other in college and had shared many secrets and desires as young lovers, but grown up plans pulled them apart and adult aspirations kept them away from one another. Now though they must face each other as both of them are called into service by the CIA and have to stand up to terrorists that have no interest in anything but money and revenge. Their mission is one of hostage rescue in a third world country while posing as a married couple under the guise of UN diplomacy. They will work with negotiators in close quarters and tight spaces trying hard to ignore the pented-up feelings toward each other that never went away while they get the job done. Trying to keep things professional and uncomplicated while terrorists are surrounding you is easier said than done because love comes in the strangest places under the most dire of circumstances. The love burns strong between them and the emotions are fueled by not only love but fear that this might be the only time they will ever have together again. They both want to think of tomorrow but how can they when the thought that this is the last day on earth is surrounding them.
But as with all great plans this one comes apart very quickly and Lucy and Gus realize that not only do they need to understand the meaning of teamwork they have to rewrite it. The Columbians suspect them of being spies, the other "negotiators" don't trust enough to reveal all the details of the trips and Lucy's fear that she is falling back in love with Gus is not a match that should make for happy endings under good times but in the jungle with terrorists how is it possible.
This amazing book cannot be summed up with one word or another because it is so many things all at once. It is a wonderful romantic story with Lucy and Gus working through old feelings and new emotions, as well as, adventuresome with the trip through the jungle and detailing sophisticated spy gadgets. It is also an underlying story of survival with the hostage victim's plight being explained and a feeling of true sadness at their blight. It is a great author that can draw all this out in a book and this series has shown that the storyline can continue, the drama unfold and romance still survive under any circumstances.

Marliss Melton has to be one of my favorite new authors. She has only written six books but the last four about Seal Team 12 are great. She seems to have picked up where Suzanne Brockmann left us. I really like the stories about Seals, not only are they good guys but they are really putting their lives on the line for our Country. Her Seals are real men, men who can face the toughest of battle and the tenderest of emotions.
Soloman McGuire is a senior chief, he has faced the loss of his family and child when his wife ran off while he was on assignment. She wanted more than the life he could give her and she took his son with her. She has been gone five yrs and he has no idea where she is.
Jordan Bliss is in Venezuela attempting to adopt a young child she has grown to love, when there is a major coup. Jordan has not had an easy life, she has faced a cheating husband and the loss of a baby. She is determined to save one little boy.
Jordan's sister was a physical therapy nurse, she was there to pull Rafael Valentino back from death two yrs ago and now she calls him for help to save her sister. Rafe is with the FBI and shortly Seal Team 12 arrives to get Jordan, Soloman must pull Miguel from her arms and force her on the plane. He finds it hard to do but he is following orders.
Jordan fights and screams her way back home but she is determined to go back and get her child. Soloman can't forget the woman who would give anything even her life for her child.
The story is complex but brings the two people back togather, and Soloman slowly finds himself falling for Jordan, but even if she does fall for Soloman she will find a way to go back for Miguel.
I loved this book and look forward to many more from this wonderful author. Do not miss it, highly recommended.

Identity: Unknown (Tall, Dark and Dangerous, Book 8)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't see anything posted as to what this book is about, so here is the info from the back cover: Navy SEAL Mitchell Shaw woke one morning with no clue as to who he was. And the items hidden in his possession were no help--an address, along with a .22 caliber side arm. The address led him to the Lazy 8 Ranch--and its beautiful manager, Becca Keyes, who made him believe he might have a future, even if he wasn't sure about his past.
The gun was another story altogether....
Since I first discovered her work, it has been my pleasure to read every book that Suzanne Brockmann has written. I have many favorites by this wonderful writer, but I have to say that I have particularly enjoyed Identity: Unknown. As an extremely jaded romance reader who has been reading love stories 35 years and romance since its inception in the early 70s, in my opinion, this book totally fulfills the highest purpose of romance, to make the reader feel, and feel intensely. The emotional and passionate impact of this story is tremendous! I believe there are multiple reasons for this achievement.
First, characterization. Since romance, more than any other form of fiction, is utterly character driven, the most essential requirement for excellence is wonderful characters. Ms. Brockmann has totally succeeded at this goal in Identity: Unknown. These characters are not just sympathetic, they leap from the page.
Second, conflict and motivation. This book is brimming with believably motivated and very gripping external, internal, and most important of all, relationship conflict between the lovers. It is essential in a romance that the lovers be together constantly, be absolutely "made for each other," and yet something compelling and believable keep them apart, elements which are there "in spades" in this book.
An additional vital component of excellent fiction, including romance, is great plotting. It is very evident in this book in Ms. Brockmann's fascinating use of a continuing Navy SEAL theme. When Mitch, the hero, receives an injury while on undercover assignment that leads to temporary amnesia, this fascinating plotting device works beautifully with a well-motivated internal conflict centering around the honor and integrity of the hero. This in turn seamlessly leads to the exciting external and internal complications which race the story along and keep the reader rapidly turning pages.
Along with all of the above vital components of good popular fiction, in a romance, there is the additional requirement of a love relationship of such an intensity that the reader is moved to tears, quivers and sighs. In this, Ms. Brockmann thrillingly exceeds our expectations. The tenderness, poignancy, trust, compassion, caring--and blazing sensuality--between Mitch and Becca are astounding.
Mitch is one of my all-time favorite heroes, and, which is all-important for me as a reader, the heroine is worthy of him in her ability to love, her bravery, initiative, independence, and ethics.
Do yourself a favor and read this book, one of the best the romance genre has to offer! And after you do, pass it on to all your friends and relations who have ever scoffed at romance.

SEALed and Delivered .... well delivers! OK, before you kill me for the bad pun, I promise you will go away happy with all those much desired warm and squishy feelings that make a book worthy of your rainy day all huddled on the couch looking to be taken away.
Haley and her sister Rachel have settled back home at The Sutherland, a B&B in San Diego on the beach. The beautiful and historically rich house held a lot of memories for the two sisters and there were in for hardships trying to restore the old home back to it's former glory and there were in desperate need of some patrons and fast!Haley who has been engaged three times has vowed off men for good.... ya right sister you just keep telling yourself that! But little does she realize that she is in for the ride of her life. At their friends bridal shower Haley picks up a Fate Card which says, "Kiss the first man you see" .......... oh an there just happens to be a group of sexy SEALS running drills on the beach up from Coronado. First man she sees, that is Nate. running drills with his team he is blown away and very distracted by her sweet sweet lips and even sweeter kiss! Haley who I liked very much is a girl after my own heart, she is a true girly girl, so NOT Nate's type. So why is the sex on a stick, rough around the edges SEAL so enamoured with her! Oh leave it to those fabulous alpha makes to pursue and conquer and that is just what Nate intends to do. He takes his own card in a bit of fun, it says. "Don't take no for an answer". Well hell, what's a guy to do!Constantly telling him that they aren't dating and will NOT be dating, this is a fling, fun is the name of the game and Haley isn't about to get into another relationship that will only end in broken promises, broken hearts and yet ANOTHER broken engagement! The fun part is the two getting to know each other, if there ever was a game of opposites attract there two would be the poster children. It's what makes it so interesting, the challenge. Making the opportunity of knowing Nate and all his mates Haley sees a way to make some money for the B&B, Spot a SEAL! Which only add a lot of laughs as all the single ladies come out to spot the men on the beach running more drills in and out of the water.Nate is lovable and generous and sweet and wants to be loved himself. Did I say lovable! Ohh, I do just love the guy! He is a man who cares, about Haley, her business and his team. A little more to add to the drama is the side story of Jake and Amy, a sweet story and ties a lot of loose ends. A love story that in itself helps make the story complete. Hot and steamy I couldn't get enough of all of these characters. I hope Jill Monroe will write a story about Haley's sister Rachel. A no non-sense kinda gal you just want to see with her very own happy ending. And frankly I would be thrilled to see what happens and how all the other characters have progressed!!

Foxfire is a secret seven-man team. Few even know they exist. Each man has chip implants so Lloyd Ryker can track them and monitor their body functions. The men share special genetic technology, still experimental. The nanotech and bio-enhancements enable them to accomplish impossible tactical work under deadly fire. Each member has particular specialties. One member, Gabriel Enrique Cruz, mastered the ability to control animals. He was receiving new training when his mind snapped. Cruz went rogue. Then the worst possible thing happened, Cruz escaped.
Inside their individual containment units, Lt. Trace O'Halloran was the first to realize something was wrong. Trace's special ability allows him to set energy nets and carry out controlled psi sweeps with his mind rather than eyes. Trace alerted his commander, Wolfe Houston, via mind link. Trace's sweep informed him that Cruz was causing the chaos. This surprises Trace and Wolfe because Cruz supposedly died over a year ago. Trace's sweep is confirmed when Lloyd Ryker pulls them out of their containment units. Only a member of Foxfire could hope to hunt down another member. Trace cannot be on this mission because his sister, Kit, is involved. So Ryker sends Wolfe in alone.
Cruz's target is in New Mexico. Kit O'Halloran is a civilian dog trainer. Kit has eleven years experience training service dogs for law enforcement and military units. Her success rate is unmatched. Currently, she has four dogs undergoing training. Kit has no clue that these dogs are special. She has never even heard of Project Home Run. And she has no idea of the genetic technology within the dogs. These four black Labrador puppies are a team in every meaning of the word. The runt, Baby, is the obvious leader. Diesel, Butch, Sundance, and Baby can communicate with each other, plan and execute strategies together, and sense things other animals could not. Cruz intends to get his hands on Kit and the dogs no matter what it takes.
Wolfe is just as determined to protect them from Cruz. Like Cruz, Wolfe has a way with animals. Wolfe's ability with animals is not as good as Cruz's though. Wolfe can also create image displacements, meaning he can cast illusions and alter the memories of others. Since Kit already knew Wolfe, it made him the perfect choice to protect them. Wolfe must not reveal too much to Kit about the himself or the dogs while protecting them. At the same time, he must locate Cruz and bring him in. It should not be too difficult for Wolfe, except that Kit is no longer the same girl he knew. She has grown up and is now a huge distraction.
***** Author Christina Skye continues her stories of battle-honed Navy SEAL members ... and this one is the best to date! Foxfire is the team sent in when all the other elite teams fail, so you can only imagine the potential waiting for Skye to access. The possibilities are unlimited. This story starts out with a bang and ends with one too. You will have no time to breathe, much less stop and cook dinner. Non-stop action from cover-to-cover. My advice to you is this: take a few vacation days from work and order a lot of pizza. You are in for one hell of a ride! *****

Down and Dirty (Viking Time-Travel) Review

Down and Dirty (Viking Time-Travel)

(More customer reviews)
In ROUGH AND READY former Medieval Viking now Navy Seal Torolf Magnusson traveled back to eleventh century Norway to aid Hilda Berdottir and the abused women of the Sanctuary end the tyrannical reign of Steinolf. One minute Torolf and his SEAL buddies (born in the 20th Century) were sitting in a longship replica in the middle of a fjord and the next they had traveled back in time.
However, once the battle had been won and they had returned home, Torolf's modern counterparts all had trouble wrapping their minds around the "time travel' concept and nobody had spoken about it since. Still Zachary "Pretty Boy" Floyd had fond memories of a big blond and beautiful warrior by the name of Britta. Pretty Boy had no trouble getting women. They had a tendency to throw themselves at him. No, he hadn't been a monk since his return to the present but he couldn't help wondering from time to time, what if? His story is Down and Dirty.
Not that Zach had much time to wonder about much these days. He'd landed himself in a heap of trouble, make that responsibility. Frenzied sex in the heat of battle on a mission in Afghanistan over five years ago had resulted in a son Zach had recently discovered. The child's mother had been killed fighting against the Al-Qaeda and her own father, a powerful and brutal leader who as a result gained custody of little Samir. While on a mission Zach had recovered "Sammy" and had returned with him to the U.S. The "kidnapping" had become a diplomatic nightmare, and Zach's punishment had been assignment to the Navy's latest experimental program, WEALS a female version of the SEALS. Yes he definitely needed a woman ... to babysit Sammy the snot. Oh he loved his son, but what a handful!
Britta the Big, had lost interest in warfare following the departure of her friend Hilda and the time traveling SEALs. It had been thought that they'd all perished in a mudslide. But when Britta left the walls of the Sanctuary she had become once more at the mercy of her [...] father and brothers who had it in their minds to marry her off to some loathsome lout for their financial benefit. It was thus that Britta found herself behind the walls of a nunnery. But even there she was not safe for her kinsmen had no qualms about picking off anyone who stepped beyond the shelter of those walls. Already a sister or two had gone missing. And so to ensure their safety and her own, Britta had hatched a plan to fake her own death.
The best laid plans of mice and men (and women) often go awry at the most inconvenient times. One minute Britta is planting evidence of her death beneath a cliff in eleventh century Norway and the next she is hanging from a net and on a Naval installation in 21st century Coronado, California. She'd escaped torture by her father to face a new kind of torture as one of the new WEALs recruits. If that's not enough, the loathsome lout Zachary is one of her torturers! Pretty Boy needs a woman alright and it better NOT be just to babysit his pint sized brat. Britta is on the warpath and she wants to experience multiple orgy-as-hims A.S.A.P.!
Of course good old grandfather Arsallah is not about to let them all live happily ever after without complications. As a Pitt alumna I truly had to smile at the terrorist's grand diversion tactic (evil grin). Yes, that's a teaser. You'll just have to read the book to figure that one out!
What I loved most about this story is that with all capable, well trained fighting men available to save the day, it is Britta and little Sammy drawing on their courage and wits who are the true heroes of this tale. Naturally Down and Dirty is rife with Sandra's signature humor and toe curling sexy scenes. For love and laughter, I highly recommend that you read Down and Dirty.---- For PNR Reviews

The Protector (Crossfire Series, Book 1) Review

The Protector (Crossfire Series, Book 1)

Gennita Low turns from CIA/espionage stuff to SEAL action adventure in her new book, The Protector.
The story line is different, though, from the usual SEAL plots. This one is set in Southeast Asia, with a half-Asian heroine.
Cajun-yummy Navy SEAL Jazz Zeringue finds himself in hot water when he tries to rescue a young girl from prostituting herself. Mistaken by Interpol as someone trying to take advantage of a child, he's taken into custody.
Vivi Verreau, the Interpol liaison, believes Jazz to be innocent and sets him free. Things get interesting when Jazz realizes that Vivi isn't just working for Interpol, but is also a GEM operative who will be working closely with his team.
It's fun to see the testosterone fly when eight SEALs are told they have to follow a woman's orders! Gennita Low's male dialogue seems very true to life and at times very amusing.
I really enjoyed the "guy" camaraderie in her story and it's fun to be reunited with Hawk (yum-yum), Cucumber, Dirk and Mink again, as well as several other members of the SEAL team.
If you've enjoyed Ms. Low's other books, I guarantee you won't be disappointed with this one.

The start of a thrilling new trilogy featuring Jazz, a Navy SEAL who must trust a mysterious agent sent to rescue him. Navy SEAL Jazz Zeringue was taken into custody after a covert mission went awry. He had no doubts he'd be rescued, but he was certainly surprised when his saviour turns out to be the mysterious and beautiful agent Vivi Verreau. It's obvious Vivi doesn't like him, doesn't trust him, but they'll have to work together if they're to escape from enemy territory alive.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Honk If You Love Real Men Review

Honk If You Love Real Men
Average Reviews:

I bought this book for Lora Leigh (a fave erotic romance author) and Susan Donovan (a fave contemporary romance author) and neither of then let me down. I enjoyed both of their stories. I had never read anything from Carrie Alexander but I enjoyed her story as well. I must say that I was a bit surprised at Ms Britton's story and found myself not enjoying it at all.
First up is Ms Alexander's story of Estrella and Jesse. Estrella has been lusting after a guy working on a road crew in the neighborhood where she works. She's a maid for a wealthy female executive and when her boss goes out of town on business, she borrows her car, her clothes and her apartment in order to lure the hot road crew guy into her bed. Jesse sees through her "car trouble" ploy immediately but decides to see where this whole farce will go. If she's a rich lady looking to play, why not play along? Well, what he finds is a woman full of contradictions and obviously, as he discovers, not what she seemed. I liked this story. Sure, the plot is contrived but what I really liked were Estrella and Jesse. It's rare to find blue collar leads in romances and here we have a Latina and an ex-con who are both trying hard to build better lives for themselves after past mistakes. I found it refreshing, enjoyable and, of course, steamy!
To be honest, I more skimmed than read Ms Britton's story of a woman who had been raped by her fiance who is looking to get her sexual footing back. She returns to her home town and to the guy whose heart she broke in high school. He's the only guy she trusts to help her recover her sexual self. Of course he is all too willing to comply. Yuck. I thought she was incredibly selfish and he put up with way too much. And I feel I must warn readers of her other books who may not expect it, she does push the envelope with a rather torrid girl-on-girl scene. Not for me.
Susan Donovan is one of my fave authors of contemporary romance and this is another of her fun, amusing and sexy stories. Win is a screenwriter who has hit a slump but still has a deadline to meet. Her agent sends her off to his cabin in the woods to get her inspiration back. Fully knowing that some of the appliances may not be in working order and that her neighbor Mac, a capable and hunky Navy SEAL on leave, is nearby to fix anything that goes wrong. Anything. Will he agree to be her muse? Sexy fun!
In Lora Leigh's story Raven has had it bad for Reno for years. They both know it just as she knows he's been crazy about her as well. He never acted on his feelings because she was too young at the time. He joined the Navy, traveled the world, waiting for her to mature. Now he's back, home on leave, and the waiting is over. He and Raven will finally act on the mutual attraction that sizzles between them. But when feelings intensify can Raven get over her fears about his being a SEAL? She saw what it did to her parent's marriage, can she deal any better than her mother? Intense, hot and emotional. Classic Lora Leigh.

Dangerous Games (Tempting SEALs) Review

Dangerous Games (Tempting SEALs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lora Leigh's book has received some great reviews on here, but I simply can't get past the enormous errors printed on those pages. First of all, I felt like I fell into the story around Chapter 8 of a much longer work. Obviously this is the second book in the series, but there wasn't enough backstory to actually make me feel as though I understood what had happened previously. Characters popped up and faded away as Leigh needed them in or out of the story.
The errors...oh my. First of all, the story is about Navy SEALs. Why does Leigh write TWICE that the hero, Clint, joined the Army? The Army and the Navy are different branches of the military. She calls him "Special Forces" which is a group in the Army. She also has her hero drop out of high school at 17 and join the military...sorry, folks, that can't happen. Under the age of 18, a recruit must have the signature of his parents to join (I know, 'cause I did). Also, you must have at least a GED to join if you don't have a high school diploma.
Next we have a bunch of SEALs apparently stationed around Atlanta, GA because they all have apartments there. A very distinct part of joining the Navy and being a SEAL is the fact that you work around large bodies of water, such as the ocean. There is no ocean near Atlanta. That may be the reason that the real SEAL teams are based out of coastal Virginia and coastal California.
Leigh places her characters in a club in South Carolina. It's a two hour drive from Atlanta to the SC border. That seems like a long drive just for a hot nightclub.
And let's talk about the clubs that her SEALs frequent. They are BDSM clubs, and apparently it is a well-known fact that her SEALs have been partying here for years now. Only problem there is, half the stuff that happens in BDSM clubs is illegal according to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Now, I understand that SEALs follow a slightly different set of rules, but no one would allow it to be so very well known that they go to BDSM clubs and possibly cause the loss of a career.
Another point I questioned...how did the hero come up with the $40,000 needed to gain exclusive entrance to one of the clubs at the same time that he was sending enough money to his mother that she could buy a house with it? Leigh never states what rank her hero has gained, but unless he's an Admiral, the money he is spending seems a bit more than his budget will allow.
Those were the most glaring problems I encountered. The drug operation that is running was slightly confusing to me, as were the intentions and actions of the bad guy.
The "erotic" aspect of the book was good: Leigh is deliberate in her sex scenes and adds plenty of emotional ground for her characters to cover while they're getting hot and heavy.
As a story, I would probably give the book three stars, but with all the errors I found, I'm stretching to give it two. Either Leigh's research or her editor should have picked up on these obvious problems.

Into the Fire: A Novel (Troubleshooters) Review

Into the Fire: A Novel (Troubleshooters)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have accepted that the Brockmann who gave us such classics as "Over the Edge" and "Out of Control" is gone, and this trend continues in her latest Troubleshooters book. Once again it's non-stop action, lots of injuries, and thinly drawn romance. It was, however, a very riveting book.
This review contains spoilers.
I've never been a fan of the "secretly in love with this guy but lets him marry her best friend, and wow, he's been in love with her too" story-line, so Hannah and Murphy interested me less than the secondary characters. For me those characters stole the book. Decker, Dave, Sophia, Nash, and Tess finally get a little more screen time. But let me break it to you - Sophia does not end up with Decker. Maybe Brockmann was going to go there several books ago, but she's not going there now. Which is very disappointing.
There is an explanation as to why Nash has always been such a secretive mess, and it satisfied me.
Now on to Izzy Zanella. I fell in love with Izzy in "Into the Storm", because the guy is such a freak and has such great one-liners. Kind of like the Wildcard of old. (Not the Wildcard of his own book.) But then Brockmann decided to pair him with a just-turned 18 year old who is pregnant with another man's child. Did I mention that Eden is Gillman's sister, Gillman, who hates Izzy? Oh, and Eden has the requisite awful childhood baggage, too. In one of Brockmann's favorite plot devices, they have a marriage of convenience which ends about as well as Sam's and Mary Lou's did. This storyline is not concluded in this book, since we are supposed to care about these star-crossed loves and follow their saga to the next few books.
Not for me. Not gonna happen. These two squick me out, for starters. She's 18, he's 29. They saw each other, got attracted, and that was the extent of their great connection. I don't WANT them together, I don't want to read about them so much as brushing elbows. I don't know if she thinks they are the next Gina and Max, but wow, they so are not. Eden is spunky and fiery, sure, but she's 18. And much as I love Izzy, he is not Max. I hate that she took Izzy there, just hate it. It's gross. It wouldn't work.
I'm sure in the next Troubleshooters book - or the one after that - since she loves to drag these things out - Izzy will be at the Ladybug Lounge, moping around, still wearing his wedding ring, waiting for his teeny-bopper wife to grow up. Then she'll get kidnapped by terrorists and they will rush in to save her, where they will argue while bullets fly around their heads, then hook up against a wall and decide they're in love. See, to me, this isn't romance. There's no build-up, no explaining WHY this person, just 1) Attraction 2) Hook up 3) Marriage and HEA. And in this case, I agree with Lopez; it's wrong and it won't work.
So why did Gina and Max work, but not Izzy and Eden? It's not just the age, although just-past 17 is TOO young, for me, but the situation. Max didn't take responsibility for Gina right after meeting her, he didn't marry her instantly and expect it to work. He tried to push her away, and while it got annoying, it made sense. But mostly I got a sense of the inside of their heads, and why they felt the way they did. With Izzy and Eden, I saw no reason why they liked each other beyond physical attraction. None at all. And it all happened SO fast.
It was an entertaining book, it kept my interest, but Brockmann is no longer an auto-buy for me. I loved seeing glimpses of my old favorites, and hope that she gives Lopez his own book. But I really miss the romance.

The Defiant Hero (Troubleshooters, Book 2) Review

The Defiant Hero (Troubleshooters, Book 2)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I purchased "The Defiant Hero", I really wasn't expecting to like it(me not being a big fan of action, shoot em' up types of novels). The book was much more than I expected it to be. In fact, the next in the series is at the top of my reading list. If I'm not mistakened it's entitled "Over the Edge".
The "The Defiant Hero" actually involves three stories in one, with approximately six main characters. One story(the main one) involves Navy SEAL, John Nilsson and Meg Moore, the woman with whom he fell in love a few years earlier, but couldn't have. Meg and John(Nils) are brought together again when her daughter, Amy, and grandmother, Eve, are kidnapped by foreign terrorists. John wants to make sure he doesn't lose Meg a second time as she makes every attempt, by risking her own life, to save that of her daughter. Out of desperation, Meg is beyond reason and is willing to do whatever it takes to get Amy back, and Nils is more than prepared to make sure she doesn't make herself the sacrificial lamb, even if he has to die doing so.
The second story taking place was my favorite and is why I loved the book. It involves the beautiful, biracial FBI agent, Alyssa Locke and handsome Navy SEAL, Sam Starrett. Sam and Alyssa met during a previous mission, and have decided that each doesn't like the other. Their paths cross again when they're forced to work together to try and rescue those being held. The sexual tension between these two is working overtime. Alyssa sees Sam as nothing more than a chauvinistic male racist, while he 'seemingly' views her as a stuck up sexual object. Through the strangest of circumstances, sparks start to fly, something Sam had been secretly hoping for all along. Alyssa, on the other hand, isn't so willing to form any type of relationship with Sam, to his dismay.
In reality, these two individuals are really into each other, yet they don't realize it. I found this part of the book to be the most enjoyable. It was not only romantic, but funny as well. You'll find yourself laughing out loud at Sam and Alyssa. I can't wait to read Over the Edge, Brockmann's continuation of the series. In that book the story of these two complicated people continues.
There is a third story which involves the grandmother's retrospective of her earlier life as told to Amy and one of the kidnappers. This one, I didn't like. There didn't seem to be a need for it, especially with the other two stories being so well written. I found myself rushing through this part to get to the other two(Starrett and Locke's especially).
