Secondary characters sparkle, especially the irrepressible roommate with the fantastic matchmaking skills and a heart of gold A delightful, thought provoking read, NAVY SEAL DAD comes highly recommended.

Lucy does not do helpless and she absolutely has no time for complicated emotions. Lt. James "Gus" Atwater is a Navy Seal working as part of an elite CIA support and he has no time for anyone that does not understand the meaning of teamwork. What these two don't know is that none of their training or covert operative experience is going to help them when they meet up again after many years apart and have to face all the demons that a past relationship has, especially one where there are unresolved issues.
Gus and Lucy knew each other in college and had shared many secrets and desires as young lovers, but grown up plans pulled them apart and adult aspirations kept them away from one another. Now though they must face each other as both of them are called into service by the CIA and have to stand up to terrorists that have no interest in anything but money and revenge. Their mission is one of hostage rescue in a third world country while posing as a married couple under the guise of UN diplomacy. They will work with negotiators in close quarters and tight spaces trying hard to ignore the pented-up feelings toward each other that never went away while they get the job done. Trying to keep things professional and uncomplicated while terrorists are surrounding you is easier said than done because love comes in the strangest places under the most dire of circumstances. The love burns strong between them and the emotions are fueled by not only love but fear that this might be the only time they will ever have together again. They both want to think of tomorrow but how can they when the thought that this is the last day on earth is surrounding them.
But as with all great plans this one comes apart very quickly and Lucy and Gus realize that not only do they need to understand the meaning of teamwork they have to rewrite it. The Columbians suspect them of being spies, the other "negotiators" don't trust enough to reveal all the details of the trips and Lucy's fear that she is falling back in love with Gus is not a match that should make for happy endings under good times but in the jungle with terrorists how is it possible.
This amazing book cannot be summed up with one word or another because it is so many things all at once. It is a wonderful romantic story with Lucy and Gus working through old feelings and new emotions, as well as, adventuresome with the trip through the jungle and detailing sophisticated spy gadgets. It is also an underlying story of survival with the hostage victim's plight being explained and a feeling of true sadness at their blight. It is a great author that can draw all this out in a book and this series has shown that the storyline can continue, the drama unfold and romance still survive under any circumstances.

(More customer reviews)Marliss Melton has to be one of my favorite new authors. She has only written six books but the last four about Seal Team 12 are great. She seems to have picked up where Suzanne Brockmann left us. I really like the stories about Seals, not only are they good guys but they are really putting their lives on the line for our Country. Her Seals are real men, men who can face the toughest of battle and the tenderest of emotions.
Soloman McGuire is a senior chief, he has faced the loss of his family and child when his wife ran off while he was on assignment. She wanted more than the life he could give her and she took his son with her. She has been gone five yrs and he has no idea where she is.
Jordan Bliss is in Venezuela attempting to adopt a young child she has grown to love, when there is a major coup. Jordan has not had an easy life, she has faced a cheating husband and the loss of a baby. She is determined to save one little boy.
Jordan's sister was a physical therapy nurse, she was there to pull Rafael Valentino back from death two yrs ago and now she calls him for help to save her sister. Rafe is with the FBI and shortly Seal Team 12 arrives to get Jordan, Soloman must pull Miguel from her arms and force her on the plane. He finds it hard to do but he is following orders.
Jordan fights and screams her way back home but she is determined to go back and get her child. Soloman can't forget the woman who would give anything even her life for her child.
The story is complex but brings the two people back togather, and Soloman slowly finds himself falling for Jordan, but even if she does fall for Soloman she will find a way to go back for Miguel.
I loved this book and look forward to many more from this wonderful author. Do not miss it, highly recommended.

Joe is dealing with a lot of survivor's guilt and blames himself for the loss of his teammates and takes to the booze.
His neighbor Penny (who has a long standing crush on him and who he has never really paid much attention to) coincidentally becomes his physical therapist (giving great massages!), then his friend, and eventually, his lover. But Penny doesn't expect much from Joe, because she's witnessed his love 'em and leave 'em lifestyle and she doesn't really expect a commitment from him.
Penny's somewhat irresponsible younger sister Lia comes to live with her due to the threats she receives from the person who she believes to be their father's killer. (Their father worked at a bio tech weapons lab where the deadly chemical ricin was a toxic by-product and some mysteriously disappeared and was sold. They believe that he was run off the road in a car accident because of what he knew.) Both Penny and Lia are now in danger and Joe decides to help protect them.
Penny and Joe's romance develops slowly and believably and becomes passionate, and when Penny's life is directly threatened, Joe questions just what she means to him and what he really wants out of life.
Lia (a bit reluctantly at first) has a romance of her own with a very sweet younger-than-her Navy SEAL. Even though he's younger, Vinny's much more mature, and helps Lia to grow and be more responsible.
Whew...this one really got to me. Two great romances in one book! I was dabbing at my eyes the whole way through! I especially loved that characters from the previous three books made appearances, too. Some, like Hannah Lindstrom working with the FBI on Penny's case, had significant roles. By the end of the book you will find out the latest with Gabe & Helen, Luther & Hannah, Sebastian & Lela, and Westy & Sara. The touching finale is like a scene from a movie.
If you enjoy reading Suzanne Brockmann, I can almost guarantee that you'll enjoy Marliss Melton's books, and I think that this may be her best one yet!

Forget Me Not (Navy SEALs, Book 1) Review

(More customer reviews)Wanting a light read to help pass the time on 5 hour airplane flight, I picked up Melton's FORGET ME NOT because a reviewer here compared it to Suzanne Brockman's navy SEALs books. Melton's plot is interesting: A navy SEAL escapes captivity and returns home with PTSD-induced amnesia after a year-long bout of brutal torture, but the SEAL's amnesia renders him vulnerable to the treasonous military who sold him out in the first place. Meanwhile, the SEAL's relationship with a wife he doesn't remember is turned upside-down when this once macho and emotionally distant man returns home emotionally vulnerable and in touch with what really matters in life. The problem with FORGET ME NOT, unfortunatley, is shoddy writing and unforgiveably poor research. Melton spends the entire book telling the reader how her characters feel, rather than showing us with action and dialogue. Also, Melton's phobic-like avoidance of the word "said" became annoying quite quickly. For example, in the span of
2 pages, her characters
"drawled," "muttered," "inquired," "interrupted," "encouraged," "asked, "prompted," "gasped," "agreed" - rather than "said." And her lack of research was way beyond lazy. For example, one character is introduced as a psychologist, then for a few chapters he's referred to as a psychiatrist, then he's referred to as a psychologist again. Does the author really not know the two professions are entirely different?
Where was Melton's editor???
Which brings me to another point: Why is it so difficult to find a well-written romance novel? It's books like this, published in draft form (by major publishing houses!), that give the romance genre a bad name. This is entirely the fault of the publishers. Rather than churning out a glut of unpolished, unedited novels, I wish they'd get themselves back into the business of publishing quality fiction.
That said, if it's a well-written romance with a military backdrop you're after, stick with Suzanne Brockman. (She probably edits her own work!)

But Hannah disappears, and two of Gabe's SEAL team are called in to rescue her from a Cuban general's compound. Luther Lindstrom and "Westy" McCaffrey arrive just in time - Hannah has killed the general when he tries to assault her, and they hastily pull her out. Sure that her life is in danger, Luther helps her change her appearance and has her stay with him. Westy finds it humorous that Hannah has no idea who Luther is. Most women flock to him because of his past as a Dallas Cowboy.
Just getting over a heartbreaking engagement, where he discovered that his fiance was more interesting in his money and servicing the rest of the base, Luther is looking for a good girl who wants to settle down, wait for him to return from his missions, and have his babies. Hannah on the other hand is an alpha female and can [.......] as good as a SEAL. Her desire is to get a position as a CIA agent and live a life of a covert operative. As the two get closer, they act on their attraction, and try to outrun the bad guys. Not knowing where they can turn or who they can trust, while determining if the ultimate goal they have always proclaimed that they want is indeed what they want.
Westy is a breath of fresh air in this one - his reactions and trying to control his humor at Luther's expense is priceless. They make a great team, and soon Westy gets his own story in the follow up, "Time to Run" due in February 2006. This is a great stand alone story, but it really helps to have the background by reading "Forget Me Not" first. Both are first rate stories, and manage to build on each other, making this a must-read series.

Too Far Gone (Navy SEALs, Book 6) Review

(More customer reviews)I have been hooked on this series since the first book and Marliss Melton gets better with each installment. She definitely has out done herself this time. "Too Far Gone" had me hooked from the get go. The characters were introduced in the previous installment "Don't Let Go".
Ellie Stuart is a single mother of three boys and Sean Harlan is her Navy Seal landlord. Ellie and her boys were abandoned by her ex-husband and she is raising them on her own. One night, she is ambushed and the boys are kidnapped. Off course, Sean, who has grown to love her boys (and lusts after Ellie) steps into to help find the boys. Their search takes them on an action packed journey exposing corruption and making you wonder what will happen next. I could not turn the pages fast enough.
Melton also brings back characters from the previous books. Fans of the series will not be disappointed with this one. Those new to the series will want to start from the beginning. "Too Far Gone" is a well written and fast based book that will leave the reader hungering for more. The writer finds that perfect balance of romance and suspense. The only bad thing about this novel is that it ended. Can't wait for the next one!

Chase couldn't turn down the woman with the sad but terrified eyes and the young son she was desperate to protect. Along the way to freedom, the adventures they shared brought Chase, Sara, and her young son closer. With each new day away from her husband, Sara gained back the strength and courage to begin anew even as an even bigger danger from a white supremacist group threatened to destroy the happiness that was almost within her reach. From the very first pages, Melton engages the reader with a riveting style of writing pitting two unlikely protagonists together. From the first moment Sara gathered the courage to ask for help to escape, she questioned her choice of heroes. Chase was as emotionally detached as one could ask for, though it must have been fate itself that made her chose such an unlikely source. Melton keeps the action going and the romance elements in perfect harmony of the characters personalities in a very realistic manner that takes this read from the mundane to the exceptional. As my initial introduction to this author, I found this an outstanding read!
