Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills Review

Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills

There are few books that capture the essence of a Marine the way that this tale does. Gunny Hatchcock was more than a Marine, he was also a heroe and a pioneer. His mastering of the sniper craft and his eventual legend were responsible for the ultimate success of the Marine Corps sniper program.
Charles Henderson does an admirable job with this book but realistically it is a story that sells itself. This narration details some of the many missions Hatchock underwent during two tours of Vietnam. It chronicles the more often than not painful self discipline that made Hatchcock the deadliest sniper in Vietnam. The author also peppers the account with enough of Hatchcock's personal life to show what a great man and Marine he really was.
The tale is amazing enough in relaying how great of a shot that Hatchcock was but the true mark is hit in that is shows that Hatchcock was a devoted Marine. To say he was dedicated would be a dramatic understatement. The tale of his stalking the Vietnam general and the patience it took to get that one shot is worth reading the book alone. It is a testament to not only his training but his own self discipline.
The book reads in a flash. I have read it several times and it hasn't lost any interest. A must read for Marines, military and history buffs, and just anyone curious about a tale of a hero.

In the chaos of the combat zone, there are the living, the dead, and the Ghost. In the ongoing Iraq conflict, there are no battle lines, no direct offensives, no ground won or lost––just the daily fight against an enemy who hits and runs, hides and sneaks. If the enemy shows himself, it's only for a moment. But for a Marine Sniper, that is all that is needed. Readers now have the opportunity, from these warriors' perspective, to peer into the killing zone through a telescopic lens, down the barrel of a high-powered rifle, and into the very heart of the enemy. The training, the techniques, and the steel will necessary to survive as a sniper are all described in vivid detail. Charles Henderson also delves into the core of the enemy––the maniacal ideology, and the tactics that have sown so much violence in Iraq––and how they are all vulnerable to a single bullet from a Ghost.

The 21st Century Sniper: A Complete Practical Guide Review

The 21st Century Sniper: A Complete Practical Guide
Average Reviews:

No, I did not get the buzz words backwards. Supposedly a practical guide, this book makes use of a large font and copious whitespace to fill it out. There is a lot of general background information that may be of interest to someone unfamiliar with firearms, but again is primarily padding to cover up the paucity of usable information.
For example, there is a chapter on optics. We learn valuable information like the reticle should look like a 'T' and not an 'X' and if you shake the rifle and the scope rattles around, it probably won't be accurate. Mil dot reticles are mentioned, but if you are interested in using them for range estimation, look someplace else. There is no discussion of other reticle types like the BCD versions or why different patterns may be useful in some situations. Other than a suggestion to make sure they are tight, no information is provided on mounts or such details as lapping the rings to avoid distorting the optics tube. Want to know the advantages or disadvantages of variable power scopes and fixed power, go someplace else. Should you have a question about what a 20 MOA base is and why you might want to use it, ask elsewhere. Confused about 40 or 50 mm objectives? Good luck. Want to know how to come up with a solution and dial it into your scope? Yeah, right.
The other topics in the book get the same gloss. If you want a book to give to your Aunt Mary who has expressed a mild interest in what snipers do, this is it. If you are interested in practical advice for long range precision shooting, save your money.

Seal Sniper Training Program Review

Seal Sniper Training Program
Average Reviews:

Filled with typographical and spelling errors.
Written in as dry a manner as any document ever written.
It was like reading a 1980's VCR manual translated from Mandarin by a Taiwanese engineer.
That said, I will heartily agree that it is a good source of information on the subject of sniping, ... if you are a SEAL Team member.

Hold on Tight (Hard to Hold Trilogy, Book 3) Review

Hold on Tight (Hard to Hold Trilogy, Book 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Chris's story is the finale of Stephanie Tyler's "Hard To Hold" trilogy and I loved this book and the trilogy so much I was sorry when it ended. I have to admit to being a little bias about this novel because I had a thing for Chris Waldron right from the beginning when he was introduced in "Hard To Hold". As his character was developed and integrated into the plot of "Too Hot To Hold", I new he would likely become my favorite. There is the fact certainly that I am attracted to heroes with a New Orleans drawl, but there is far more to Chief Petty Officer Chris Waldron then just an accent. He is the SEAL team's sniper and therefore focused and lethal, however he is also their medic, is sensitive and very intuitive, he in fact has a psychic gift. Chris is like a force of nature, he ia driven, charismatic and has a special way with women, a "magic touch" as it were, likely related to his `gift' which he never really wanted or appreciated.
FBI Agent Jamie Michaels is a complex heroine, raised in witness protection under the US Marshal's jurisdiction she built a thick wall around herself, sharing the secrets of her family with no one. Jamie met Chris as part of a romance/suspense subplot in "Too Hot To Hold", and their sexual chemistry and attraction was instantaneous and undeniable. In a downed plane, surrounded by danger and under the worst of circumstances they became intimate. Chris wanted to be with Jamie, but she wasn't ready to make any sort of commitment so at the end of the day, she let him walk away.
As the synopsis of "Hold On Tight" indicates Chris and Jamie are thrown back together following the dismal failure of a high stakes mission in Africa. Chris and other SEAL teammates were part of a Joint Task Force, the leader of the mission, an FBI agent `Josiah' is killed during a chaotic riot outside an embassy. In addition, Chris's friend and teammate Mark is tortured and killed by the rebels. It was a horrific mission marked by tragedy and loss as only Chris and one other SEAL escape. Chris wakes up in a military hospital in Africa wounded both physically and emotionally.
Jamie Michaels is the FBI Agent assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding Josiah's death. Following an initial investigation into what happened Chris is suspected of killing Josiah for a variety of reasons. It is under these unfortunate and unlikely circumstances that Chris Waldron and Jamie Michaels are forced back together and while she particularly is reluctant to get involved with him again, neither can deny their feelings, or attraction.
Upon their return to the United States, Jamie's past comes back to haunt her, there is a break in at her home. Then Chris, against best advice arrives on her doorstep and shares some shocking personal news that will either help to bind them together or push them apart. The love scenes between Jamie and Chris are erotic, special and amplified by ever present danger. I have to comment that Chris Waldron has the best medicine for migraine relief on the planet. *g*
As the investigation into the failed mission in Africa comes to a close, the threat against Jamie escalates resulting in a life and death situation that requires Chris, Jake, Nick and their commander John "Saint" St. James" to work together to protect and save her and her sister Patricia Jean or "PJ". The plot of this story is extremely fast paced, complex and full of twists and turns.
I really liked Saint, as with Jake, Nick and Chris, he is career military and a "tortured" hero. Saint meets PJ on the beach outside his home and their relationship quickly turns from adversarial to lovers. PJ's story is a complicated one and both she and Saint help each other to `feel' again.
There are some particularly heartbreaking scenes in "Hold On Tight", and I was moved to tears on more than one occasion. Chris is suffering from significant PTSD because of what happened during that last mission in Africa, he has a secret and he is keeping it close. As a result, he hasn't been able to fire his weapon since returning from Africa. During a tense, frightening climax to this story involving a deranged psychopathic killer and a hostage standoff he is faced with having to use his exceptional skill as a Navy SEAL sniper or lose someone that has become very important in his life.
If you enjoy military suspense stories involving tough, focused and exceptionally strong Navy SEAL's that are thwart with danger, intrigue, packed with action and sensuality, you may like to give Stephanie Tyler's "Hard To Hold" trilogy a try. I do think it is important to read the books in order.

SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs Official Strategy Guide Review

SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs Official Strategy Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an old guy and have trouble with shooters so i always get the books and walkthroughs on line. I bought the Socom 2 game and this book at the same time.
I found it to be of very little use because the game itself contains all of the info in the book.
It can be helpful with its suggestions for alternate routes and what weapons to start with.
In general i find the screenshot to be very hard to view and the white text on a dark background annoying. Too much time is spent on 'looking pretty' and not enough on actual help.
For instance, the book lists the weapons by name only. This means that you can only tell what the characteristics of the Armory items are by checking them in the Armory. The names alone tell you nothing about the items.
There is a section of maps at the end but they are of little value, also for the same reason. No detail. The game maps are much more useful. In the book they are simply overhead snap shots that don't offer any detail or hints.
The multiplayer maps do show Seal & Terrorist starting points, but that is all the detail you will encounter. None of the different levels are shown ie. underground caves or stories in buildings...
I am sorry i wasted my money on the book. It has been of very little value to me. It looks good though.
